B6 - Sunday, April 1, 1984 - North Shore News SS cx cat cy, READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY? By JOHN WALDY READ ANY _ good _ books lately? No? Well, I’ve got a great suggestion — a terrific read, as the book reviewers say. ] guess you’d have to call it a non-fiction. But don’t let that scare you; it’s written in a clean, no-nonsense style, and it comes in paperback: BEATS BEST-SELLERS There’s no sex, no violence, and you can’t buy it at the bookstore. And | doubt you’d recognize the author’s name if you heard it. It’s got great pictures, and I'll bet there are more copies printed and distributed every year, in multiple editions, than of any other book — even the top 10 best-sellers combined! Give up? It’s your vehicle owner’ manual. . Dont screw yopr face up like thay! It’s a darned good book. You won’y be able to put it down once you start it. Besides, you can polish it off in an hour — two, if you real- ly want to get into it. For a book with no plot, it's well organized. Holds you right to the very end, with everything easy to find in either the table of contents or the index. The writing style is simple, straightfor- ward, easy to understand. malt: So are the diagrams and 1l- lustrations. Everything, from cover to cover, is either ver- bally or pictorially explained. Of course, the book 1s published to acquaint vehicle owners with their purchase — at least those who take the time to read it. And, I think it succeeds by uSing a minimum of jargon. While the contents may vary a litthe from edition to edition, depending on the manufacturer, much of the same material is covered in the same way. There’s a sec- tion On Operating instructions explaining starting and operating procedures that save unnecessary wear on your vehicle. ' There’s a section on the Various instruments and con- 4rols — complete with pic- tures and diagrams — that explains what all the dials, buzzers, knobs and switches are designed to do. Then, there’s always a chapter on the growing number of safety features that appear on new cars every year, and that are intended to protect us and enhance our driving pleasure. A_ safety checklist often accompanies this section — which, as far as I'm concerned, should be required reading for all drivers. A MONEY-SAVER, TOO Fuel economy and conser- vation is thoroughly covered with advice on how to oy achieve the best possible fuel consumption through proper driving habits, maintenance, and energy-saving products for your car. The book goes on to describe optional equipment and explains how it works; jump-starting your disabled car; care of fabrics, chrome and painted surfaces; and plenty more. And it usually ends up by providing its reader with a handy maintenance schedule chart, which outlines when certain maintenance procedures should be performed by your service station technician. lt is full of interesting and valuable information. | recommend it. Why not sit down with a hot cup of coffee and look in- to it? That way, if somebody asks you if you’ve read any good books lately, you can tell him all about it. | DESIGNER CHOICE CONTRACT LEVEL LOOP Book of the year can save money RIDAY TIL ¢ SATURDAY 9 A.M.-5 P.M.
