Diabetes centre
open 20 years

THE DIABETES Day Cen-
tre at Lions Gate Hospital is
celebrating its 20th anniver-
sary this month.

Started in January, 1966,
by Dr. John A. Hunt, it was
one of the first Diabetes
Education Programs in
Canada. .

Originally, the staff, con-
sisting of a nurse and a dieti-
tian, ran the day centre two
Wednesdays a month. Then,
as now, the centre provided
an educational program as
well as individual assess-
ment.

Twenty years later the
centre is open Monday to
Friday and holds three group
sessions a week with special

adults and newly diagnosed
diabetics. As well, individual
counselling services are pro-
vided as needed.

The staff has increased to
include a social worker,
pharmacist, physiotherapist
and occupational therapist.
Lectures on foot care are

given by North Shore.

An anniversary party will
be held on Tues., Jan. 28, in
Lions Gate Hospitai’s Medi-
cal Day Centre from 3 p.m.
to 6 p.m.

Everyone who has attend-
ed the Diabetes Day Centre
over the past 20 years is.in-
vited to join the celebration.
