four summers several drown-
ings and accidents have been
reported in the Capilano
River area, so West Van-
couver Police are urging
parents and children to
realize the potential danger
of swimming or playing in
the vicinity.

Police spokesman Mike
Hooper explained that “the
current is very strong and
there’s very little access to

the river in cases of
emergency.”
Even strong swimmers

face difficulty with the swift
undercurrent, submerged
rocks and low temperature
of the water, he added.
Swimming areas in other
North Shore Parks have life

guards, Hooper said, and
these areas should be used.

Visits to any natural park
should be carefully super-
vised by adults and syste-
matic checks should be
made to insure all persons
are together, he warned.
