TV or not TV? That is the question QUESTION: I feel rather dismal over the way in which I am allowing television to crowd into my evenings and claim for itself so much of my time. At least three nights aoeweek, and sometimes even more, I sit down to watch TV “for a while” and end up watching it for hours. Many a time I have started watching as early as 7 o'clock and have continued until the end of the Carson show at 12:30 a.m. Sometimes I even add a late movie to that agenda. Why would a grown man allow himself to do something like that, even after he has become aware that he is so critical of himself for doing it? it seems to me I am acting as though TV is an addiction of mine. I make resolves to watch it less, or to refuse to ticular week and agree with myself not to watch anything else. But none of these plans has worked very well. Too often all together I waste a whole evening, promising myself time and again that after the thing ['m watching is over Tl turn off the darn machine and walk away from it. But I don’t keep the promises. What's to do? And for goodness sake, don’t tell me I need to develop will power! KITCHENS LTD Est 1974 | L UDO GREVE “(wner Manager | — — PVOWEST LSTH CAT LONSDAL LS Sy QUESTION: I live’ very close to the centre of a hot- spot on the North Shore. The reason our spot is hot is cats. It's hard for me to under- stand how it is possible for four or five otherwise friendly families of human beings to become belligerent with one another over the behaviour of a few cats. Some neighbours have complained about these cats (four of them living in one house) spoiling their gar- dens, yowling at night, fighting loudly, etc. My own feeling is that the human beings involved are behaving more obnoxiously than the cats are. Three families I C19 - Wednesday, March 23, 1983 - North Shore News Hayden won't get catty know of are against the cats and two are all for them. Our home is smack in the middle of this childish squabble. Can you support one side or the other and help us get this business untangled? STEWART: I am a con- scientious objector during any war over cats. Let the world know I am a con- tented pacifist. I turn my back, and run for cover, leaving others to endure the carnage. My feeling is that you people will suffer for a while, or even become mortal enemies until someone (not me!) comes up with a plan of action that will result in a ceasefire. I hope I will remain humble about the brilliance of my decisive commitment to neutrality in this case. You see, I once, about four years ago took a stand about cats in this column and found that cat lovers are rather excitable people. It was Mark Twain who said that a person who tries to carry a cat home by the tail learns twice as much as he would have learned if he had not had the experience. If you learn that much from a cat — imagine what you'd learn from a cat lover. That's what I always say.
