It is raining. The waters of Burrard Inlet are the
color of rat hide. When the sailor pushes open the
door to the pub, the wind forces its way in with
him, sending a chill to my table.

The setting reminds me of
the opening pages of Zorba
The Greek.

The sailor making his way
toward me is Karl Begrich, a
German, not a Greek. But
there is that same kind of
high energy, that sense of
excitement about life.

Karl’s main claim to fame
is a film he did called Escape
Under Sail, which got
praised, up and down. He's
now done another called
Gone Sailing.

To shoot these films he
travelled more than 10,000
miles on a 48-foot ketch. to
the South Seas, and later
hitched a ride on a genuine
tall ship, the U.S. Coast
Guard traning barque,
Eagle. ees

Good stuff. Karl did a
pretty handy job of hanging
from just about every corner

Rezoning

People who sail are in-
variably, um, what can you
say? Im tempted to say
they're all crazy, but that
wouldn't quite express what
I mean. They are crazy, but
it’s more a mystical kind of
craziness than the  land-
lubber kind.

You've got to be moti-
vated, right?

My favorite line about
sailing, or at least about
being at sea, is Herman
Melville's, in Moby Dick:

“Whenever I find myself
growing grim about the
mouth; whenever it is damp,
drizzly November in my
soul; whenever I find niyself
involuntarily pausing before

berately stepping into the

Yet this is the modern
world. When we get down to
talking about the meaning of
sailing, Karl admits that he
prefers filming to sailing.

Of course I am indignant
that anybody should admit
this, especially when so
much of their reputation
rests on being a heavy-duty
salty dog.

about Sailing ability — I
prefer deisel to wind — but

excuse — like meeting a
real-life sailor in a water-

jacket, and allow a little halo
of salt-water funkiness to
hover over me.

Whereas Karl, the actual
sailor, is dressed like a, well,
like a film producer — in a
brown jacket and white
turtleneck. ,

He admits that he often
gets seasick.

In fact, it turns out Kar]
has a bit of a problem with
other people’s expectations.
After he shows his film, the
people in the audience wind
up with the impression he’s
some kind of super sailing
whiz.

“Qn a day like this,” he
says, “hardcore sailors go
out there sailing. Me, I
couldn't give a hoot about it.

Now that I think about it,
Jack London and _ Jack
Kerouac probably had as
much fun, if not more,
writing about their adven-
tures as experiencing them.

Karl, you're in a great
tradition.

To film the sea is surely as
heroic as trying to express it
in a poem or a book. And, of
course, as hopeless in the
end....

When Karl left, the wind
blew in again, and the chill
came back to my table.
