(Courtesy Craven Foundation) The ‘Big Green Machine’ The “Big Green” Bentley is a landmark in the history of the British automobile industry. It belongs to the classic period of vintage sports cars, and typifies their design in the twenties and early thirties. The three litre was first produced at the end of the First World War. the prototype appearing in 1919. W.O. Bentley had already earned a reputation with his Bentley Rotary engine, which powered military aircraft, notably certain Sopwith Camels. Bentley first entered competition in the Tourist Truphy Race and the Indianapolis 500 in 1922, and at Le Mans in 1923. In the tatter event, Clement and Duff drove their Bentley to fourth place, and to a first place the following year. For the next six years, Bentley entered cars in each race. They were unsuccessful in 1925 and 1926, but won in 1927, witha 3 htre dnven by S.C.H. Davis and Dr. J.D. Ben- jafield, thus beginning an unbroken series of victories lasting until 1930. Most of these were provided by 4'4 and 6'4 litre cars. Only a hundred were made, most with luxurious closed bodies on a_ 156” wheelbase, but a few had open tourer bodies made for the shorter 144” chassis. In either case, the Bentley was nol an inexpensive car. The chassis alone cost $9,000.
