Da rby, pic Se est Coast Guard vessel THE NEWEST high endurance search and rescue vessel used by Canadian Coast Guard was named at a ceremony in North Vancouver Saturday. Mme. Mary Pepin, wife of federal Transport Minister Jean-Luc Pepin, named the 885-tonne vessel George E. Derby, after a minister and medical. doctor who ran a medical mission in Bella Bella for 45 years. ; The naming ceremony was carried out in Vancouver Shipyards in North Van- couver where the vessel has been undergoing extensive modifications. ° Built in 1972 by Bel-Air Shipyards, of North Van- couver, the 56 metre former oil rig anchor was bought by Transport Canada in January this year for $4 million. She sailed from Halifax after working on east coast drilling operations and landed at the Victoria Coast Guard base last spring where the job of converting her for search and réscue began. Total. costs of the vessel, including the conversion work, amount to $6 million — about half the cost of building a new vessel. She is the Coast Guard’s largest dedicated search and rescue vessel on the west coast and will have a crew of 16. The George E. Darby will patrol exposed coastal waters, particularly Queen Charlotte Sound, Hecate Strait, Dixon Entrance and the western coasts of the Queen Charlotte Islands and : OF tured at the naming ceremony are North Van City Mayor Jack Loucks,:Mme.
