New early test | for colon cancer Early detection of cancer of the colon, one of the most common types of cancer, soon may be possible with a simple test similar to the Pap smear now used to test for cervical cancer. The—-—non-surgical technique was developed by Professor Charles Culling and Dr. Philip E. Reid, University of British Columbia pathologists, who have spent the past 10 years in research on cancer of the colon. Six months ago they began laboratory” ex- periments to see if they could deyise a practical. test for early diagnosis of the disease. “It was the Pap smear that started me off,” said Culling, one of the world’s leading histo-chemists in the field of carbohydrates. “Every hour of every day a Canadian contracts ‘cancer of the colon. What was needed was a simple test‘to make carly diagnosis possible.” He foresees the time when the technique is developed to the point where patients can enter a doctor’s office for the test. The test would involve putting a swab in the rectum and removing some mucus from the wall of the colon. The mucus would be stained by a chemical, turning blue if cancer was present or red if 1 was normal. “If diagnosed early, either the cancer or the colon can be removed, and the patient cured for life,” Culling said. So far, the technique has been tested only on cancer specimens removed from paticnts. Clinical testing will involve specimens from several thousand = patients and volunteers to determine whether the test will work with specimens taken tn doctors’ offices. Culling and Reid have received a Canadian Cancer he Society grant of $20,730 for this year and a similar amount for 1980 to complete trials of the early detection test. , Previously, cancer of the colon was difficult to find and even when it spread to .other organs, the physician would have difficulty in determining the location -of the original tumor. “Now if cancer is found in the lung or liver and we can identify colon mucin by Staining biopsy sections, we can tell the surgeon if the primary tumor is in the colon,” said Culling. Dr. W.L. Dunn and Dr. Ann Worth, pathologists, and Dr. M. Graham Clay, a surgeon, are also members of this research team. .Wecause every child has the right to smile 1979 _ International Year of the Child Unicef Canada © y oat WER aN a ee Uy eS ee nee ~ on Vinyl Wallcoverings Beautiful New Additions!
