more expensive than one in which
you do much of the work.

option that deserves consideration,
especially. if you have expensive
. valuables to transport.

“We all think we’re capable of .

packing our treasures carefully,”
. explains Clay, “Sand to a degree,

“What's mest.-often missing
from these self-help efforts,
however, is the specialty packing
materials. that are normally used
only by professional movers.
“For example,’’ he continues,
“‘there are special cartons designed

work and other valuables that
provide maximum protection
against damage.

“You can’t get that same pro-
tection from an ordinary card-
board carton from the grocery
store, no matter how many sheets
or towels you pack around the
abject.

“And, to make matters worse,
if the object gets damaged or
broken, you're responsible, not
the mover.’’

What Clay does suggest to save
mongy on a move is a frank and
open discussion with the mover.

“If you need to keep the costs
down,’’ he says, “‘tell your mover.
Ask for suggestions about how
you can save without risking your
valuables. You’d be surprised at
the cooperation that comes from a
professional!.”’

One suggestion Clay offers is to
talk to the mover about a com-
bination pack in which the mover
takes responsibility for your fur-
niture, appliances, china,
glassware and other valuables, and

you self-pack your soft goods like

linens, bedding and clothing.

“and don’t forget,’’ advises
“that most professional
movers can provide you with the
kind of packing cartons you need
to self-pack for the greatest safety
protection.”
