DROP-IN FOR PARENTS Caregivers LI BOESEN and her family sold everything in Omaha, Nebraska, and moved here. “ICs pretty. We decided that what Nebraska was lacking in natural resources, B.C, had,” explains Boesen, By ROSEMARY PARRETI-KEEVIL Contributing 4% That was in !984 and the 33- year-old mother of two has never looked back. Now she is the coor- dinator of the seven drop-in cen- tres on the North Shore where children under five and their caregivers can mect. Boesen says she believes in these centres. ‘‘] have a two-and-a- half-year-old and a= four-and-a- half-year-old and I used to drive from Lions Bay to go to the drop- ins to keep my equilibrium. I en- joyed the contact with other adults.”” Boesen says these gatherings are a good opportinity for moms who can feel isolated, especially if they have worked right up to the birth of their first child. There are often speakers sched- uled for the adults, who are en- couraged to socialize with each other in another room near the onc supported where the children play. There is some supervised cirele time for the youngsters as well as free time. Boesen stresses this is not a babysitting service. But a super- visor and an assistant, both with early childhood backgrounds, are always on duty at cach location. The drop-ins are offered one to three mornings a weck for approx- imately two hours a session. The cost of each two-hour session ranges from $2.50 to $3.50. The West Vancouver drop-in is at Inglewood Centre. The North Vancouver locations are: Highfands United Church, the Lucas Centre, Queen Mary Com- munity School, Lynn Valley Unit- ed Church, Seycove Community School and Maplewood Communi- ty School. The North Shore Family Ser- vices Saciety (NSFSS) started these family get-togethers 10 years ago. Boesen would like to see more adults and children participating and is also looking for unique ideas to raise money for the centres because funding is fragmented. Although they cost $30,000 a year to run, the NSFSS is committed to them because it believes they pro- vide a valuable service.
