NICK Bantock’s prodigious output
began long before Griffin and
Satine.

Prior to the runaway success of the series
ten years ago, the man formerly known solely
as an artist says he “never considered myself
a writer. T became a writer by accident. | was
told I was no good as a writer, and I believed
it. When f found [ could write. it was a com-
plete shock.”
Bantock’s mixed-media history is chreni-
cled in The Artfinl Dodger ( Raincoast, $55):
an instalment he says covers “the first 50
years — IT hope there will be a part nwo to
come.”
Since the first Griffin aud Sabine wilogy
‘(another is on its way), Bantock has written
numerous works of fiction, along the way
also producing collage pieces, pop-up books,
and nonsense poems about animals he made
up on the bus ride to his then-downtown
Vancouver studio.
“I wanted to ereate a marriage of words
and images,” he muses. “It’s about trying to
get images their respect back, because of the
degree to which society has downgraded s
