JOHN Swope’s shadow loomed so large in
Hollywood that Dennis Hopper attributed his start
in the business to the legendary photographer.

Betore he became a lensman, Swope was a theatre man. At
Harvard he helped assemble a group of Ivy League thespians,
including Henry Fonda and James Stewart.

It was Swope's friendship with Fonda and Stewart that
helped get him backstage in Hollywood.

~~ Known later for his LIFE magazine assignments and gritty
wartime work in Japan, Swope spent his early years as a photog:
rapher creating a unique portrait of Tinsel Town.

From working as an assistant producer and stilis photograph-
er, Swope moved into the documentary cealm, chronicling
movieland in the studio heyday of the late 1930°s.
