north shore news MAIL B OX Launch ferry fiasco inquiry Dear Editor: The adage “If vou can't stand the heat, get out of the Kitchen!” eaphiny why after the Question Pertod on Feb. 1, the provincial government so unceremoniously moved to adjourn othe legislature. Considering the heat the gov- ermment has been taking on the fast ferry fiasco, the move is understandable, At the same time it is totally irresponsible. We have not even reached the halfway point in the Nisga’a debate. The Opposition argued vehemently against the motion, but predictably, to no wail, Tt scems the whole process of debating, thas become an exercise in futility, The business of the legislature wrapped up almost as abrupt- Was tt had started on Jan. 13. Ostensibly, the adjourn: ment is to give the freshly appointed minister” responsi We for BC Ferries and Aboriginal Atfairs time “to get up to speed.” Funny! Powas under the impression that the minister, albeit new to the job, was supposed to be well versed an both topics. The simple truth is: the government needed a break from vetting hammered daily by the Opposition on the fast ferry debacle. Adjourning the House allows the government to think of better excuses to jus tify their incompetent: han dling of the ferry boondog- ule! There are no excuses. An independent, public inquiry should be called immediately, Katherine Whittred, MLA North Vancouver- Lonsdale Discrimination denounced Dear Editor: Asa person of the Jewish faith F wish to commend Noel Wright) tor the principled stand be took in this column “Stupid Charter needs rewrit- ing” (Jan. 31) en the matter of the discrimination practised by the B.C. College of Teachers against graduates of Trinity Western University, a Civistian institution. Considering what the trends are nowadays, I strong- ly doubt that the radicals of the B.C. College of Teachers would have dared to persecute graduates of a Jewish or Moslem institution of higher learning, had one been in existence in B.C. It is co the credit of Trinity Western that it asks its stu- dents to abide by certain moral principies in an age that exalts fornication and devia- tion, These moral principles do not derive trom Judco- Christian ethics alone; they are shared by many cultural traditions. Above all, they are rooted in common sense, a quality that has become tragically scarce in our deranged society. ft is preposterous of the B.C. College of ‘Teachers to gratuitously presume — that graduates of Trinity Western will necessarily show intoler- ance towards homosexuals. And it is ironic, because it is that very organization that has shown intolerance by riding roughshod over Surrey par- ents who did not wish their children to be introduced to homosexuality at a tender and innocent aye. Shoutd net the B.C. College of Teachers be charged before the Human Rights Commission tor dis- crimination on religious grounds, and wilful disobedi- ence of court orders?
