Layne Christensen News Reporter layne@asnews.cont TONY Rudner makes songwriting sound simptie. Essentially, it’s a marriage of words and music, says ¢ North Van songwriter and music producer. If you analyzed most songs, says Rudner, you would find that neither the lyrics nor the melody could stand alone, Its how the nwo work together that can make a song a hit. OF course, it’s not really that simple. “Songwriting takes years of practice like any- thing else,” says Rudner, who has had a few hits of his own. He wrote Borderline Angel lor Universal recording artists Farmers Daughter, as well as produced their first album. Next week, Rudner will share his expertise in a course he’s offering through North Shore Continuing Education. Songwriting: Elements and Practice runs Tuesday evenings at Carson Graham Secondary, Jan. 26 to March 2. Cost for the six sessions is $79. As a fan of the jazz greats of the ’30s and *40s he’s appcared on CBC Radio’s Snap Crackle Pop to spin selections from his vast record collection. As a songwriter he’s penned tunes for Sylvia Tyson, Valdy and others. As Bim he toured the festival circuit in the ’70s and early 80s. And more recently, as a member of UHF, he has toured and recorded with Shari Ulrich and Bill (Chilliwack) Henderson. This past fall the North Van musician released his first solo recording in four years. Forbes will perform selections from that album, Crazy Old Moon, at the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre Jan. 29 and 30. Squamish in song Squamish is the setting for a gospel sengfest Sunday. The Sea to Sky Singers will be hosting a choral clinic under the direction of American conductor and composer Diane White. White is artist-in-residence at Westmont College and the First United Methodist Church in Santa Barbara. She’s here at the invitation of Trinity Western University. The singers will be joined by Squamish United Church Choir, Valleyeliff Mennonites and Whisder Singers. Sunday's choral clinic is 6 to 8 p.m. at Squamish Baptist Church, 2262 Kead Cres., and is open tc the listening public. At 9 p.m., all singers will join as a mass choir for what musical director Colleen Koop says will be a memorable performance. Admission is $5 at the door. Spoken werd The Vest Vancouver Community Arts Council has received a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to produce a second series of Spoken Word literary readings. The readings are the third Thursday of the month, 7:30 p.m. at the municipality-owned Silk Purse Arts Centre, 1570 Argyle Sc., West Vancouver. Upcoming readings are by Terry Glavin, Kate Braid, Kathryn E. Shoemaker, Des Kennedy, Tor Henry, Caroline Adderson, Sara O’ Leary and Shannon Stewart. The literary evenings are free.
