12 —Wednesday, September 3, 1997 — North Shore News (Cem Capilano cam College FANS hon Artistic effort recognized at Oct. 10 gala By Layne Christensen News Reporter layne@nsnews.com A composer, a song- writer and husband- and-wife puppeteers will share this year’s FANS award, FANS, or Fund tor the Arts on the North Shore, was estab- lished two years ago by the North Shore Arts Commission to support the development of the arts on the North Shore. The FANS award recognizes the creative achievements of nationally renowned North Shore residents. Past winners are actor Robert Clouthier, best known as Relic on The Beachcombers, and portrait artist Elizabeth Smily. Nominecs have included glass artis: Robert Studer, choreographer Judith Marcuse, singer Ann Mortifee, painter Daniel Izzard, and .composer Michael Conway Baker. This year, the award format has been changed, according to FANS committee chairman Linda Feil. “There won't be winners and losers,” said Feil. In the past, the names of finalists were publicized, with a single win- ner announced on award night. This year, there will be no surprises. Instead of one winner there will be three “honorees.” The names of artists who were nominated but not sclect- ed for recognition will not be made public. Their names will be passed forward for consideration at + ture awards nights, said Feil. . Coulthard was awarded the rs jevement Order of Canada in 1988. Also picking up awards are singer- songwriter Roy Forbes and Lauman and Arlyn Coad. Forbes performed under the stage name Bim in the 1970s to mid- 1980s, and cur- rently tours with Shani Ufrich and Bill Henderson as UHF. The Coads’ Coad Canada Puppets have won numerous awards and travelled the world. The awards will be present- ed Friday, Oct. 10, during 2 gala celebration ar Capilano College’s new Birch Theatre. The evening will include performances by North Shore artists, a visual art exhibition, auction and reception.
