GE mailbox A7 - Sunday News, August 9, 1981 Council Dear Editor: In view of Alderman Lanskail’s comment that “Your publication has con- sistently misrepresented the so-called high rise issue in West Vancouver,” kindly allow me to comment on some of his points raised. 1. The group ‘supporting down-zoning do have “a special and essentially selfish interest,” this selfish interest being to maintain the past quality of life in West Van- couver and not see it eroded ~ any further, as is now surely going to happen, with the Who determines ‘unwanted’? Dear Editor: I wish to make a few remarks in reply to the letter under the heading “Other ‘Tasks for Pro-Lifers,” on page A8 of the North Shore News of July 29, 1981, by R.M. West Vancouver. The reason R.M. sees the same arguments repeated is that there is really only one argument against abortion: that it is the taking of human life, which is wrong from any ‘lll- informed’ about Hooker Dear Editor: It is evident by Ernie Sarsfield’s letter im = your August 2 edition that he missed the main thrust of my letter in your July 19 edition regarding the turnout for public discussion of the Community Hazards Task Forces recommendations. In that letter 1 emphasized thal out of some 20° speakers there were at least 10 who were delegates from organi- zations which must have represented many more hundreds who were unable to attend The very purpose of sending a delegate by any orgamizabon 1s that the delegate is authonzed to express the views of the Toshiba and Litton/Moftat to meet or beat any other your budget a favour More than 25 models to choose from inciuding the newest from Panasonic, price on the | ower Mainiand Before you buy. do yoursell and shoul resultant evils that we see so clearly in the West End. 2. Alderman = Lanskail queries the lack of “broadly based community support.” The attitude of the vast majority of West Vancouver residents is clear beyond any shadow of doubt. I remind Alderman Lanskail that at the public hearing held on November 3, 1980 in the Municipal Hall, approx. 267 concerned property owners in the affected areas were in favour of the proposed amendment, whereas only eight were opposed. Does the Alderman point of view. We allt know there is “filth and degradation” and poverty in many places in the world. Is the solution to kill the unwanted children or to improve the conditions under which they live? What difference is there in taking the life of a fetus before birth, or of the child after birth? Perhaps a few months time. It 1s the same person, who may have grown up to be you or me. organization. Council's notice of the meeting invited individuals and delegauons. Mr. Sarsfield ignores these facts. His reference to members of the police, fire departments, safety forces and Task Force members as forming quite a large part of the hundred or so of the persons present was a little naive. He speaks of people being “aH informed.” | would say that his statement. quote, “They now demand all in- dustry in their area be moved” unquote as loin formed as well as mdiculous The industries referred to in the demands were only those which constituted a com. munity hazard Mr. Sarsfield MICROWAVE'S COST LESS AT COLONY HOME FURNISHINGS all priced advertised COME SEE US AT COLONY suggest that the support of Surrey and Delta and Langley i$ required to the down-zoning to show “broadly based community support’? 3. West Vancouver is NOT a commercial area, but a choice residential area. If certain owners wish to turn one-family lots into high-rise lots, this is converting a resi- dential lot into a semi com- merciat lot. Council is there- fore fully in its rights to pre- vent this by downzoning. The date 1958, when land was designated for apart- ment construction 23 years As for “freedom of choice,” if a mother is allowed freedom to choose to kill her baby, is it any more wrong for anyone to “choose” to kill their neigh- bour if he or she is “un- wanted.” Who would decide who is unwanted? And if R.M. believes it is the basic right of a human being to choose for them- selves, why is he/sh¢ trying to tell opponents of abortion what we should be doing to loses sight of the fact that it was District Council who set up the Task Force to investi- gate the hazards referred to and bring back their recom- mendations to Council, If he refers to the recommenda- tions of that Task Force as being devoid of logic and evidence and based solely on group hystena then | would ask him to pay special atten- tion to the background of every member appointed to — that VFask Force Would he make the charge that) people lke Derek Inman the chairman were devoid of loge and evidence and were given to group hystena? In view of changing and deteriorating circum- stances, corrective changes should be made by down- grading an_ historical mistake. 4. Alderman Lanskail refers to “morally wrong” and “morally justified” in his reasons for defeating the proposed downzoning. |! have always understood that Aldermen represented the views of the greater number of people for the greater benefit of people, and that the primary moral obligation of Council is to the com- serye society better? How does he/she know we are not working for the causes mentioned? In any case, they have no relativity to the abortion question. | do not think of the slaughter of animals, birds and fish in the Same category as the slaughter of millions of unborn human beings. Leah D. Archibald North Vanocuver . munity that elects it. However, the narrow views of a tiny handful of would-be high-rise developers, solely concerned with a selfish profit motive, has been put before the interests of the greater number of West Vancouver residents. 5. 1 make a= grim prophecy. that when the current available West Van- couver high-rise lots are built upon. and the recent furore has died away, ap- plications will be made to rezone to high-rise use the single family lots, beginning with first Fulton Avenue, reed wishes of majority then Gordon Avenue, then Haywood Avenue, avenue by avenue, from 11th Street to 27th Street, until the Present apartment zone eventually meets Panorama Village and the Trans- Canada Highway. That will be the ultimate legacy we will inherit af the rights and views of the majority of residents are not recognised now, and Aldermen con- tinue to feel not obliged to follow the majority views of the voters who elect them. L. Lewis West Vancouver Height restriction to all properties Dear Editor: In reply to Mr. Breckner’s letter, I must point out that the amendment | proposed would have applied the height restriction by-law to all commercial properties in Deep Cove. including the ‘development which has been the source controversy. If the Council had passed the amendment it would have applied to Stage 2 of that development as well as to any re-construction of Stage 1. The defeat of the amendment results in the of so much enrichment of some com- mercial property at the expense of others which | have described as _ being discriminatory and unfair. As to the Mariners’ Cove Condominiums, there has never been any offer from Council for either a hotel or pub on tins site to my knowledge. The Ratepayers Association expressed unqualified approval of this development. TOHN R.
