A year ago | was in the position to go on welfare. I lacked computer skills after 10 years experience in c¢leri- cal on switchboards and cus- tomer relations. The day | registered for welfare IT took the initiative to get into an Administrative Secretary Program for six months. Basically I starved on $500 per month to getan education and better myself. This was well worth ir. Six weeks after the end of class I received word that 1 Due to reasons beyond my conirol 1 was let go two months later. This has been an obstacle that I now have to overcome even though | know that ] was an innocent victim. The point is simple. My education that was funded through Social Services was the best thing I did for myself in a very long time. Education breeds self-worth and confidence. The job market is a harsh environment burt if you have the skills, the hope and the confidence to succeed you will make it in this world. There will be obstacles put they can be overcome. Don't stay on welfare for the rest of your lite. Get an education through it and get off it! Then you will be hap- was hired on as a. switch- pier for it. Trust yourself. board operator receptionist. Tina Whatcott with ScotiaMeLeod. North Vancou Dear Editor: . I take exception, for the second time this month, to a News viewpoint item (Nov. 22 “Forest Friends”). Its three salient points concern pushing for a better drinking water quality, to ban all logging in old growth forest, and te stop all road building in old growth areas. Again [ quote from the August 199] Watershed Management Evaluation and pol- icy review of the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) final summary report regarding water purity. “The microbiological quality of the GVWD source water is very high as indicat- ed by the low levels of coliforms measured routinely at each of the three sources, the reason being no waste water discharge in the watershed and ... a restrictive access control program.” . Regarding fogging of old growth forest — “the GVWD secks to develop a more diverse multi-aged forest that is healthier ver and betrer able to resist insects, disease and fire than an unmanaged stand. This of course requires the systematic removal of decadent timber.” Regarding road building: “a major objec- dve of the GVWD road system is to provide access tu enable detection and suppression of forest fires. GVW road construction has no identifiabie correlation to turbidity at the water intakes.” On the need for more roads, the GVWD should develop a long-term road plan based on the multiple criteria that drive the need for access into remote watershed areas, These statements are from independent experts in each of the fields and are the result of many vears of study and testing in the watersheds. May [ ask what studies Friends of the Watershed are using as a basis for their statements and when you are going to pub- lish them? James R. Tam sure the demands by sports orga- nizations on a local newspa- per must be sometimes over- whelming. Of interest, we did receive one call wondering why we needed sponsors for a league of eight 15-year-olds. I re- read the copy and yes, that is what it says. I guess that’s why they call it the North Shore Free Press. Nonetheless, your etforts are noted and greatly appreciated.
