NATIONAL housing, starts
fell by 4.5% in July, reported
Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corporation
(CMHC) today. Total starts
were at a seasonally adjusted
annual rate of 129,300 units
compared to June’s 135,400
units.

Urban single starts rose by
2% in July to 61,500 units.
The rise: partially offset the
construction rate of urban
multiple units which fell
15.7% to 44,100 units. The
estimate for starts in rural
areas increased 3.9% in July.

“Despite monthly ups and
downs, mostly because of che
volatile multiple unir segment,
the new housing market is
trending higher,” said CMHC
economist Michel Laurence.
“Construction in the single-
detached market, in particu: -
lar, has now reached its fastest
pace since September 1994,
Further gains in this segment
are to be expected with
affordable new house prices,
low mortgage rates, and a
steady job marker.”

Urban starts in British
Columbia posted a 6%
increase in July, reaching its
fastest pace since January
1995 on a seasonally adjusted
basis.
