West Vancouver Council ts pressing ahead with
a campaign to have school taxes removed from
property and levied, instead, according to “ability

to pay.”

As a first step, it wants the
provincial government to
meet 75 per cent of the cost

of the basic education
program in all public
schools, beginning next
year.

This would leave only 25
per cent of school casts to be
raised by municipal property
taxes.

Last week council passed
a resolution to that effect to
be presented at the Sep
tember annual mecting of
the Union of B.C.
Municipalities — which is
already on record as en-
dorsing a 75-25 per cent split
between Victoria and local
taxpayers.

The West Van resolution
