dytuft) and heather can be used very
effectively as a ground cover. I have
seen plants 1.5 metres (5 ft.) in
diameter..

..One lovely old courtyard in
England I visited was paved in patio
stones about a metre square. All the
five-centimetre (2") gaps between
the stones were planted with an
array of rockery plants. Each one

_ was a different height with a differ-
ent leaf and foliage color. The
mounds of color and | greenery
spilling on to the patio stones creat-
ed an excellent effect.

Most are quite drought tolerant.
A light application of compost each
year with some supplementary “low
nitrogen” fertilizer (ie 4.10.10) will
keep your plants growing and flow-
ering. Wood ashes are a good
source of potash (potassium) and—
will also help to raise the pH level.

{f your plants suffer from partial
winter-kill or look straggly in the
spring, prune them back to some
live buds and force them to bush out
again. In our wet climate some
plants will be over-run with moss.
Spray with moss killer and/or comb
out the moss to allow the plants
more fight, heat and dryness.

Many gardeners assume rock
garden perennials will only bloom
once a year. To encourage the plant
to put out a second or even a third
flush of flowers, you should dead-
head the old flower stalks as soon
as they begin to deteriorate.

When the plants become well
established it is easy to propagate
many of them by division, If you
don’t want to risk cutting into them,
try layering the longer stems and
see if they will form roots some dis-
tance from the crown of the plant.

ing in local gardens. Try one or two
plants of several varieties and plant
them where you want more
color.Within a year you should
know which ones are well suited to
your particular conditions.
