HIS BEAT-UP car, his slop-
py wardrobe, and even his
name -— it’s alla shame,
and a low-down dirty one at

‘that. .

_ Shame (Keenan Ivory Wayans)
was an outstanding cop, until a
drug bust turned into a bloodbath.
They put the blame on Shame and
now he ekes:out a sorry living as
a private detective. When his for-
mer partner, Sonny (Charles S.
Dutton), brings him’a case to

~ track down a woman, he sees a
chance to clear his name by nail-
ing Ernesto Mendoza, public
weasel No: 1.. :

This lacklustre pot boiler trots
out every action-detective cliche: ©

- the latino drug lord, the yawn-

: inducing brawls, even the devoted
secretary, this one named Peaches
(Jada Pinkett), =.

' Oh, I almost forgot. It’s sup-
posed to be a comedy. You would

«think something written,directed

“. and starring Wayans, noted for his

me on Shame, clichés abound 1

edgy comedy series In Living
Color, would have skewered and
even mortally wounded this tired
genre.

But outside of a couple of
mildly funny lines and Pinkett's
sassy, strect-smart performance,
this is just a pointless re-tread
with offensive stereotypes,

Weill, at least he got the title
right.

Science World)

Touted as the biggest dam
movie you ever saw, for once this
is no idle claim.

Filmed in IMAX, the docu-
mentary puts you on eye level
with a pair of our national sym-
bols as they build a home, start a
family and avoid predators.

Not very remarkable, you'd

think, and probably covered on
countless nature shows. And right
down to the occasional staged
event, you'd be right.

But there is a big difference —
the huge 70mm frame to be pre-
cise.

The format engulfs the viewer.
Besides offering the usual beaver
titbits (the beaver’s natural engi-
neering ability is second only to
humans in transforming the sur-
rounding environment), the film
sucks you into their habitat.

The camera takes aquatic dips,
skimming alongside the family as
they construct a 300-foot-long
dara that turns a flowing river into
a pond and meadow.

Easy to follow and avoiding
stomach chuming shots, it’s a film
suitable for kids of any age which
isn’t surprising since the entire
centre is a sort of science playpen

with hands-on experiments and
exhibitions.

An additional short, Weaving
Ants, is a less ambitious study of
a species that makes their nests
from feaves held together with
larvae-spun threads. What starts
as a study of a bizarre insect,
eventually turns into an ant-eat-
ant world as it concentrates on
their ferocious battles with
invaders.
