The ~- controversial preamble was originally introduted by former ‘prime minister John Diefenbaker’s Bill of Rights but an NDP member for Burnaby in- timated that reference to “the supremacy of God” would be contrary to the right to freedom of con- science. It seems’ everyone nowadays is concerned about equal rights as far as human rights are concerned: the women’s right to equal pay, the government's right to form unions, the right to protect homosexuals, and soon. But when it comes to God. and spiritual or moral values, there are no rights. Have we swung that far left that we not only have had. prayer and the Bible removed from our public schools but it seems BLOOD MONEY: My old friend Dave Catton of West Van, president of the B.C./Yukon Division of the Canadian Red Cross is hopping mad at Canada’s eleven health ministers — with good reason. Late last year the ministers rejected a Red Cross proposal for a non-profit blood processing plant to process lifesaving plasma from voluntary donors. Instead they awarded the contract to three com- merical labs, only one of which (Connaught Laboratories of Ontario) has even minimal experience in plasma processing. The idea is to put blood- giving on to a profit basis after 34 years of the Red Cross’s voluntary donor systom which has been described in an international survey as “the best in the world”. The new concept would see commercial blood donor clinics established across Canada, paying donors $15-$20 per 750 ml of blood. The current com- mercial cost of plasma produced by this method apparently works out about $55 per liter — as against $23 per liter for the plasma from voluntary non-profit . blood that could be produced by the Red Cross scheme, once the capital cost of = its proposed plant was amortized in six or seven years. Un-: tamination and a per capita blood program cost of $6 compared to the Canadian per capita cost of $2.50 under the current Red Cross voluntary system. The effect on hospital costs is obvious. Make no mistake. Con- naught and its competitors are into blood for the money. Period. If you still think the voluntary Red Cross “gift of life” approach is the right way — morally and economically — to meet the unending call for blood, write today to B.C. Health Minister Jim Nielsen, your MLA, your MP and the newspapers with a loud, loud squawk of protest.
