Equation eas 44... if there’s a war, that’s the _ kind of guy I want on my side. 99 - Dominic Alvaro, math teacher A GRADE 11 Argyle Sec- ondary School math student has most people at the North Vancouver school scratching their heads. By Surj Rattan News Reporter Dominic Humphrey, 16, has managed to de something not even his math teachers are able to do. He has remembered the first - 1,013 digits to the mathematical equation pi, 3.14. He recently proved this to his classmates when he punched out all 1,013 numbers while they checked his figures using a pi chart. : They did't tell Humphrey that somewhere in the middle of the 1,013 digits was a single wrong number. He knew that hirnself, and, after having a quick glance at all the numbers, found the wrong digit and replaced it with the correct one. “J read it a couple of times, and it just didn’t feel right. 1 knew there was something wrong,” Humphrey said after- wards. He added that it took him three hours to remember the first 1,013 numbers of the pi equation. **1 couldn’t do it. I would say most people couldn’t do it,”’ said Humphrey’s math teacher a uh SUPER MATH student Deminic Hum equation pi. Dominic Alvaro. ‘‘Everyone says, ‘What good is it to know that?’ On the other hand, if there’s a war, that’s the kind of guy I want on my side.”’ And Humphrey himself is not too sure why he decided to remember the mathematical equa- tion’s first 1,013 numbers. “‘My dad thinks it’s a waste of time, and my mother is not that interested in it,’’ said Humphrey. “Pm = more interested in com- puters, and | will go into com- puters when I go to university.”’ Alvaro said Humphrey is one of the top math students in the school and is very quick at the subject. But mathematics is not the only area in which Humphrey has ex- celled. He is also one of the best chess players in B.C. and at one time was ranked second in B.C. by the Canadian Federation of.
