Tenants sheuld plan fire safety in their building SPONSIBILFFY FOR the fire safety of an apartment building rests with each and every resident. That's why it is so important that you plan together to keep our building as firesafe as possi- ble — and learn the right thing to do should fire break out. The first place to start is to learn the facts: ® Smoking is the #1 cause of all fatal apartment fires. And, nearly a third of therm are caused by someone smoking in bed. Other smoking fizes start when a cigarette is dropped in uphol- stered furniture, when smoldering butts are thrown in waste paper baskets, or by other careless acci- dents. * Another common cause of apartment fires is heating equip- ment. Fires start when people leave combustibles, such as paper or clothing, too close to heaters or stoves, Improper use of space heaters can also lead to fire. © Most residesitial fires occur at night — when condominium and apartment buildings are most heavily populated. And, even though more people are on hand, night fires are less likely to be detected because people are sleep- ing. BE PREPARED Meet with your landlord or building manager to devise fire safety plans for your building. Invite a representative of your local fire department to help you out. Ask him to check the build- ing for fire hazards and advise you on fire prevention and escape planning. As part of your group planning, explore your building. Know every possible exit, including exits from laundry, storage, and recreation rooms, If hallways become smoky in a fire, your memory can help you find a way out. Remember never to use elevators in a fire. Keep exit and stairwell doors closed at all times, but not locked. And, keep exits clear of debris and storage. APARTMENT BUILDING owners and tenants should have rules for fire safety in place before an accident occurs. Use caution with flammables WOULD YOU keep a bomb in your home? A single gallon of gasoline packs the same explosive whallop as 10 sticks of dynamite. North Shore fire departments want you to be careful when stor- ing and using flammable liquids. Store paint thinner and gasoline nly in approved containers with tight lids where children can't see or get to them. Don’t use gasoline for cleaning. Never spray lighter fluid on a barbecue that’s already burning. Use flammable liquids only in well-ventilated areas when there are no pilot lights or danger of sparks. Don’t smoke while using glue, hair spray or nail polish. Respect flammable liquids. They don’t just burn — they explode.
