Coffee shop chic is the latest trend, influ- enced by Milan and Manhattan-style cappuccino clubbing. Carol Grenna FASHION STATEMENTS The all-hours hot spots turn in- to steaming fashion melting pots when a diverse mix of '90s beat- niks turn out to see, be seen and be part of the scene. These coffee houses develop a clientele of regulars, ranging in age from late teens to late 50s. They come for quiet conversation, corner tables, and to drink the best coffee in town, while keeping a careful eye on who else drinks the coffee there. They may be there to prepare for, or escape fram, the office, a movie theatre, a loud club or concert. Cappuccino club attire runs the gamut from sophisticated business classics to second-hand eclectic looks to upbeat street fashion. Cafe society is based on popular themes such as American heroes, little °50s dresses with movie starlette sunglasses, Rastafarian garb with traditional ethnic fabrics, and south side boys in baggy roiled jeans and baseball caps, sometimes worn backwards. Club attire Black reigns, especially after dark, and combines artistic black and retro black in head to toe, no-color looks. Brando biker Jeather and Blade Runner stylish feather raise the temperature. Surfer shorts and loosely hanging T-shirts, skin-tight cycling shorts and cropped tops are actually dressed up for early evenings. Van- couver’s LEONE is introducing a fashion design award program de- veloped to inspire, encourage and expose new fashion talent. The 1991 LEONE Fashion Design Award is open to all stu- dents, amateurs and professional fashion designers currently living in Western Canada. The program consists of spring °92 women's and men's fashion designs, and participants can submit entries for either category. The awards will be presented during the LEONE Fashion Theatre Gala on Sept. 26. More than 800 guests and media will at- tend the event which will include a fashion show featuring the win- ning designs. Those winning designs will be sold at Leone and displayed in a feature window during the spring 792 season. A trophy will be awarded and a plaque with the winner’s name will be on perma- nent display at Leone. Hong Kong Connection ... Nine Canadian designers were recently showcased in Festival Canada °91 fashion gala which took place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Hong Kong on June 26. Sponsored by the federal gov- ernment, a series of fashion shows will be held there until July 1. The aim of the event is to promote trade and cultural exchange be- tween Canada and Hong Kong. Some of the designers taking part include Aifred Sung, Brian Bailey, Comrags, Parachute, Marcelle Danan, Stefan Caras and Lyse Spenard. No B.C. designers were included in the event. It is the first part of a new promotion agreed to formaily by both country’s governments, the second to be a Hong Kong Festi- val in Canada planned for Oc- tober 1992. Bean Around the World is a top-notch cappuccino bar that mixes antiques and country fur- niture with a civilized, leisure-class clientele. Those who drink coffee here are impeccably dressed, whether they venture in after a movie clothed in Leslie Jane or Laura Ashley, are strolling the Seawalk in their Ralph Laurens and Club Monacos, or are en route home from the office in Anne Klein. Starbucks, whose name has become a household word, recent- ly opened in the Park and Tilford Centre. Open since the end of May, this spot is already busy with casual patrons who come in after an early movie, or office workers who come in after business hours. Milieu resides in a established spot and has many regulars who are often a more mature clientele living in the area.
