#8 - Friday, March 29, 1991 - North Shore News Hyacinths have ancient origins HYACINTHS HAVE been cultivated in Holland for almost four arda half centuries. But they or. net indigenous to the Netherlands. Botanists think the plant originates from areas uround the Mediterrancen -- from Turkey to Lebanon — and is found in the areas surrounding Baghdad. The firs: bulbs were brought from Constantinople to Vienna by Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq. There they were described by the famous early botanist, Carolus Clusius in 1557. At that time he was describing bulbs that were al- ready being cultivated. Initially, the only bulbs were the Hyacinthus orientalis L., a fragrant blue variety bearing five to 15 pendulous flowers. Thanks to hybridizing efforts, however, the number of shapes and colors increased rapidly. The Dutch city of Haarlem became world famous for this flower in the :9th century and they are still often referred to around the world as ‘‘Dutch hya- cinths.” However, the plant’s name ac- tually originated in Greece. Ac- cording to ancient mythology, Hyacinthus was a handsome youth whom Apollo killed accidentally with a discus. According to the poet Ovid, the hyacinth grew out of his blood and he died. There are many shapes and col- ors of the plant which is properly called Narcissus. The poct’s nar- cissus, N. poeticus L., which bears a yellow cup rimmed with red, surrounded by a swirl of pure white petals, is the one most often associated with the mythological tale of its name. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was an extremely handsome young man. He was destined to remain young and beautiful al! of his life, as long as he did not see his own face; that would mean his death. The nymph, Echo, was infatu- ated with him and furious with his lack of interest in her. She asked the goddess of vengeance, Neme- sis, to punish him. So, one day he was freshening up beside a clear pool of water where he became entranced with his own reflection. Unable to move, he died in that spot. Eventually, a beautiful, fragrant flower grew up in his place. The polyanthus narcissus (N. tazetta L.) is a vastly different variety. This fragrant white daf- fodil has a yellow cup, grows to Valendar This week's Rev. Harold Rosen Speaker: “The Promise of Rebirth” WEST VANCOUVER UNITED MINISTERS: Rev. John Gouws Rev. It is one of the earliest flowering varieties. It was imported from Spain by Clusius in 1565 and has been grown commercially sinve then. One of the earliest records of tazetta was a wreath of Tazetta Ppapyraceus, found in an Egyptian tomb more than 4,000 years after the burial — still in good condi- tion. The popular Paperwhite narcissus belongs to this group, too. It produces a flower with an unusual perfume and is used at Christmas and New Year's time as a house plant. The prototype of the modern yellow trumpet daffodil is thought to be Narcissus pseudonarcissus L., of which double varieties are known. The lower parts of the flower form a long tube, on the edge of which is the very large throat or cup. A poetic name given to this flower traditionally is “daffadowndilly.’*’ They are gen- erally yellow and white, with red centres. In spite of having only these few colors with which to work, hybridizers have created no fewer than 8,000 known varieties of daffodils. ey Church Otice Sy oe ST. CLEMENT'S ANGLICAN.
