The issue of pay for North
Vancouver's 1100 teachers
has been settled peacefully
for another year.

But in West Vancouver
their counterparts are in
binding arbitration after
failing to reach an
agreement with the school
board by the November 15
deadline.

The Board of Trustees of
North Vancouver School
District and the North
Vancouver Teachers’
Association (NVTA)
reached an agreement
Monday on teachers’ salaries
for the 1981 calendar year.

The settlement will
provide full-time secondary
and elementary school
teachers with a 12.1 per cent
increase and minor im-
provements in group life
insurance and dental plan

coverage.

Under the School Act,
teachers can only negotiate
salaries, bonuses and minor
items with the school
boards.

NVTA President Loretta
Ceraldi said that the
agreement was a good one -
as far as it went.

“I think our negotiating
committee did a fine job,”
she said.

But Ceraldi expressed
disagreement with the
system that only allows
teachers to negotiate salaries
and not teaching conditions.

The deadline for reaching
agreements between school
boards and teachers was
November 15.

Because a satisfactory
agreement was not reached
in West Vancouver between
the school board and the

teachers’ association the
matter is now in binding
arbitration.

As with the NVTA the
West Vancouver Teachers
Association also favors an
expanded scope of
bargaining for teachers and
Wednesday they presented
the provincial education
minister with a brief to this
effect.

As of the cut-off date, a
majority of B.C. School
Districts has reached
agreements with a similar
salary increse to that reach
in North Vancouver.
