OUTDOOR LIGHTS DESIGNED
FOR TEMPORARY USE ONLY

THE FOLLOWING is a checklist for safe outdoor lighting for the holi-
day season:

Use only light strings and electrical cords designed for temporary
outdoor use; look for the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) mark
as your insurance against fire and shock hazards.

¢ When working with outdoor wiring, be sure to turn off the electrici-
ty.

© Do not use metallic fastening devices, such as nails and tacks, to hold
Strings of lights in place. Instead, use insulated tape to attach electrical
cords to buildings, being carefui not to tape the cords over or along metal
eavestroughs. Otherwise, use insulated staples and be careful not to
pierce the wire insulation.

e Run the cords above ground, if possible, draped over wooden stakes
high enough to keep them out of puddles and snow.

® Tape all plug connections with plastic electrical tape to make them as
watertight as possible. To prevent moisture from entering bulb sockets,
turn the bulbs to face the ground.

¢ Plug all outdoor lighting into ground fault protected circuits. Ground
fault circuit interrupters (GFCls) provide immediate protection from
potential electric shock by sensing electrical leakage current and turning
off the power before any damage can be done.
