Union pickets NV marine office MEMBERS OF the Public Service Alliance of Canada sct up picket lines Monday morning around Transport Canada’s regional marine headquarters at 224 West Esplanade in North Vancouver as the union representing federal boat crews stepped up job action. Approximately 100 pickets were up from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and prevented the majority of Transport Canada employees at the office from entering. PSAC, which represents crew members on all federal vessels in- cluding search and rescue, ice hreakers, buoy tenders, research and other marine work vessels, began its strike Nov. 11 against the federal government. The two sides were scheduled to return to the bargaining table today. The strike involves 450 ships’ crews members in Victoria and about 100 in Vancouver. GVRD waste costs reduced A RULING by Environment Minister Bruce Stzachan will save the Greater Vancouver Regional District more than $160,000 a year on its refuse disposal costs. GVRD chairman Gil Blair said that he was advised by the minister that the province’s proposed per tonne surcharge on waste disposa! activities will aot apply to the GVRD’s incinerator in Burnaby. This will save the district over $100,000 a year, Mayor Blair said. The province planus to introduce the waste disposal surcharge to help fund solid waste management programs in B.C. Mayor Blair said that while the GVRD appreciates the minister's ruling, it remains opposed te the surcharge because it still applies to refuse delivered to landfills. Charter boat deadline looms BOAT OWNERS chartering vessels over five gross registered ton- nes or carrying more than 12 passengers must appiy for the Pas- senger Vessel Compliance Program before Dec. 31 or risk being prosecuted. Give information including the size of the vessel; how many people the vessel will carry; voyage destinations; nature of chariering excursions; any additional specific information about the vessel. The vessel will then be screened by a Coast Guard marine sur- veyor to determine vessel safety.
