at ery happy Sunday morn- ing to a young fellow who’s making his mark in his chosen career very early in life. John O’ Neill has lived all his growing years in a beautiful mansien on Onslow Place, with his mum and dad and six brothers. Joy Metcaife tells all ... Four of the brothers are now lawyers, engineers and devel- opers, but John and brother, Rob, stayed in the family’s hotel and catering business. Rob is president of Coast Hotels vzhile John, who is a grad of UBC Commerce and New York’s Cor- nell University, is vice-president of marketing, sales and development for the chain. He’s also a director of the B.C. Tourism Industry. The item is that the Canadian Travel and Tourism Industry gathered in convention at the Hyatt last Thursday and named John O'Neill the winner of the 1989 Canadian Hotelier of the Year award. And this week, the good-looking bachelor just moved into his own apartment on Duchess. Top Ca- nadian hotelman — and he’s only 27 years old!... Now this fellow might be just a wee bit older but experience has to count! Oh, and what a grand and glorious evening it was last Saturday for the delightful leprechaun of a gentleman by the name of William Clancey! William is the fellow who has been in the provincial limelight for years and years, particularly as the right-hand man to the late premicr, W.A.C. Bennett. Lately hz - heen doing consulting work tor 2 aumber of companies, main- op wath the Hyatt and their cor- povate clients. It was at the very impressive concert at the Vancouver Trade & Convention Centre, launching the B.C. Government’s $12 million “Year of Music’ and called Road Show ‘91, that Premier Vander Zaim made it official. He named the 25-year resident of West Vancouver, Bill Clancey, as commissioner of Road Show ‘91! Creative director for the six- month project of bringing the best in entertainment to the people of the province, will be West Van’s Roa Woodall. Other North Shore notables at the party were Comcore Public Relations Dave Laundy and his family; Lions Bay's P.R.’s Bill and Donna Greenwell; pretty PR lady Pauline Buck and her husband, Bill Buck, who has just left his position with the Crane Library at UBC after 15 years to continue his acting career full-time — and that’s gutsy! Young and Rubicam’s Mike Hurst, who was just back from Europe with Labatt’s, was there along with his artist wife, Anne; the just-retired president and CEO of Western international Com- murications, Ray Peters and his Fay and her partner, Gerry Altman, are the founders of First Night, the family-oriented New Year's Eve blow-out. They have changed their pro- gram this year so that it will begin earlier for young families, with a costumed parade from the Van- couver Art Gallery, down Howe Street, to Canada Place where there'll be a gigantic fireworks display. This year, too, thanks to Brinkhaus Jewellers, there wil! be a huge clock mounted at the VAG to tick off the official countdown. But because First Night has grown so much over the past couple of years, Gerry and Fay are desperate for volunteers. So it you'd like to become involved in this mammoth project, you can call North Van's Cathy Jackson at 631-8182. Both Fay and Gerry hope to be able to expand their New Year's Eve celebration to the North Shore next year. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!... On Saturday night’s elaborate concert program that launched Road Show “91 were such stellar celebrities as premier guitarist, Liona Boyd, folk singer Rita MacNeil, composer David Foster and West Van's Anna Wyman Dance troupe...
