West Vanconver gets a new apartment duilding in its place. Supermarket opens Aug. 31 THE TARGET date for the open- ing of the new Stong’s grocery store in Lynn Valley Centre has been set for Aug. 31. The store was formerly a Super Valu outlet, which went into receivership after operating for some time with a greatly-reduced staff. Some of the faces behind the tls will be familiar, however, as Stong’s managemert asked a number of former Super Valu employees io continue working at that location. The wages will not be as high as employees had been accustomed to, however. “We talked with the staff about what we have to do to make this store work, and I am pleased that they were willing to make these concessions,’ Stong’s president Bill Rossum told the News last week. Rossum said that while Stong’s has no obligation to the Super Valu employees, he did not want to see people being put out of work. . e floats away to new The lower wages are temporarily necessary, he said. Former Super Valu staff will also have to work three months before getting medical benefits. “They are brand new employees to us,”” explained Rossum. Although fierce competition from the proliferation of large super stores on the North Shore certainly figured in the closure of the Super Valu outlet, Rossum is confident that Stong’s will be able to make a go of it at that location. ““We have a niche to fili; there are a lot of things we offer that other stores may not,”’ said Rossum. The first of these is service in a friendly and personal atmosphere. Rossum also says that Stong’s provides a meat and produce sec- tion that is ‘‘second to none,’’ and that being smaller, it is‘a store that can react more quickly to trends. “We also have a good nucleus of people who are very knowl- edgeable about the products in the store,’’ Rossum said. ——— Budweiser beer Re know DeiDmich coats 20 much fe nwood Agi! ity you ne ng produces i firnd 1 no othe, KING OF BEERS. bes 2 huate Few acctamed Honda Accord, CRX or Ce today (OAC) ONE OF West Vancouver's older homes, soon vo be replaced by an apartment building, has not been lost. ty MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writce Thanks to arrangements made by the new owner of the house, Cameron Keddy, with assistance from B.C, Hydro and municipal staff, the 1939 house that once oc- cupied 2258 Bellevue Avenue will take up a new existence as a bed and breakfast inn on Bowen Island. There was considerable cost in- volved, but the house was moved from its location and Moated by barge to the island last week. B.C. Hydro lines had to be shut off to permit’ the structure’s passage down 18th Street to the beach the night before. Then the transfer crew waited until 7 p.m. for high tide to allow a barge to come in and fetch the house. ‘‘There was no problem; everything worked out fine,” said parks director Frank Kurucz, who had earlier had some concerns that (Me> wit 5 Sites a GA) ALL CRX Sis "Dealer cost nciuoes manutacturer's irae and POY 2 BLOCKS EAST OF CAPILANO MALL the house might block the entrance to the seawalk of an apartment garage. Although the house was not listed in the West Vancouver Heritage Inventory, local Ald. Carol Ann Reynolds (council's heritage liaison) said it was worth saving. Built oviginally for founding CCF member W.W. LeFeaux and his wife Effie, the house has been noted for its beautiful landscaping. ‘Many of the lovely camellia shrubs on the property have been donated to the municipality,”’ ssid Reynolds. Keddy, who became intezested in the house when he saw the devei- opment permit application for the new apartment, decided to make arrangements for the rights to the structure. In some ways, he said he thought the gardens upstaged the house, which was also very attrac- tive. “The inside is especially intrigu- ing with its Tudor styling, exposed wooden beams and carved oak staircase,"’ said Keddy. p:) on Sms \ eA IEG CONT WAT ugre nave unto Senay Fos Zh 1999 to tal advantage of THE (CREDIBLE FACTORY AUTHORIZED ‘89 CLEAROUT!
