REINSTATE TWICE-YEARLY PICK-UP

Residents asked to fight
against outdoor burning

OPEN LETTER TO WEST
VANCOUVER RESIDENTS

We are seeking your help in our
fight against pollution of the at-
mosphere through outdoor burn-
ing of garden debris in West Van-
couver.

This question will be coming be-
fore the West Vancouver District
Council very soon, and letters or
phone calls of protest against bur-
ning, as well as your presence at
the council meeting, are vital.

The GVRD recommends that all
municipalities stop burning in
order to reduce air pollution and is
working toward alternatives to
burning on a regional basis. The
B.C. Lung Association urges a
ban.

However, in West Vancouver
burning is allowed on the first four
consecutive Fridays and Saturdays
in April and October.

Vancouver, Burnaby, New
Westminster and the District of
North Vancouver have banned
burning. The latter has requested
West Vancouver to stop, stating
that burning is contrary to the rec-
ommendations of the Metropolitan

The many gardeners who refrain
from burning do so because they
believe in clean air for themselves
and their neighbors.

There already exist several alter-
natives to outdoor burning: bagg-
ing or bundling debris and putting
it out with other garbage, com-
posting soft materials, taking
debris or having it taken to the
North Vancouver Riverside Drive’s
new chipper (no charge for resi-
dents if the load is under 500
kilos).

A forward-looking council could
teinstate the twice-yearly municipal
pick-up, taking debris to the North
Vancouver chipper and creating as
a bonus usable organic material.
Seattle and Portland already have
chipping-recycling programs.
