Mother-daughter teams of Melody and Michelle Wood of the winter club and Pam Hunter and Susie Fought of the Hollyburn Country Club topped club playdowns to advance to the provincial finals of the doubles tournament. Stefano and Jim Walker of Hollyburn and Brian and Breen O’Sullivan of the winter club battle on the father-son side for thé coveted top spots. Twenty-six father-son teams from various tennis clubs around the province will be competing in the championships, as will 16 mother-daughter teams. Action starts at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 and runs until the finals Aug. 7 afternoon. ilies battle it out “There’s some former Davis Cup players...some excellent players there,”’ said Gary Winter of Tennis B.C. ‘‘The level of play should be quite high.”’ Hunter and Fought are the number-one mother- daughter seed for the tournament, and the O’Sullivans are seeded at number six on the men’s side of play. The Woods will have the home court advantage, as _will the O’Sullivans. From this provincial final, six father-son teams and three mother-daughter teams will qualify for the na- tional finals in Toronto Sept. 3 to 5. Should any of the North Shore teams win in the na- tional finals, they will go to the international finals at Club Inter-Sport in Lugano, Switzerland. Spectators are welcome, and admission is free. Half-way through the eight-race series, Roy has recorded 14 points. MASTERS CLASS and is tied with Lawrence Howlett of Surrey. Mike Rogers, also of West Van- couver, is holding on to a tie for 18th place, sharing the spot with Glen Nishiyama of Edmonton. Wade Lee of Calgary is now in top spot after previous leader Bill Yearwood of Vancouver was un- able to compete when he spun and slammed into a concrete wall dur- ing qualifying. The series continues Aug. 6 and 7 at the Coquitlam raceway. Swimmers eye Brisbane SEVERAL MEMBERS of North Vancouver’s Seymour Rapids Masters Swim Team are expecting to participate in the World Masters Championships in Brisbane, Australia, this fall after breaking records and finishing in the top 10 in many events in the U.S. Masters medley and the 400-metre individ- ual medley. As well as the records, she also won the 50-metre backstroke, the 100-metre backstroke, and placed third in the 100-metre individual medley. Other fine performances includ- 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke, and placing sixth in the 50-metre breaststroke; Fletcher placing sixth in the 100-metre freestyle and ninth in the 200- metre buiterfly; and Phillips plac- ing fifth in the 50-metre backstroke and sixth in the 50- Short Course National Champion- ships recently. Teain members competing in this largest masters meet held in the U.S. included Peter Cruise, David Fletcher, Patricia Gilmore, John Looye, Diane Phillips and John Priestman. The highlights of the meet in- cluded a superb team effort in the 200-metre medley relay. The teams of Gilmore, Cruise, Fletcher, and Phillips finished second in their age groups. Gilmore established three U.S. national records in the 200-metre backstroke, 200-metre individual Spuraways win tourney THE WEST Vancouver Spuraways soccer team won the !ith Annual Boys Invitational Youth Soccer Tournament in Kelowna recently. The local select under-10 team clinched the tournament by defeating a strong international team from Mexico City 8-0, Westside Kelowna 6-0 and Kamloops 6-0. In the final, the Spuraways defeated West Richmond in a shootout following a 3-3 double overtime tie. “For that age group the skill level was just outstanding,’’ said Spuraways coach John McKenzie. “Tt was very exciting.’’ Before leaving for Kelowna, the team won its six previous tourna- ments and the league champion- ship. 50 mg ed Cruise placing fifth in the metre butterfly.
