Recreational vehicle shipments up

A SURVEY of 21. recreational
vehicle manufacturers, repre-
senting an estimated 85 per cent of
the Canadian industry, indicates
shipments are up 20.5 per cent for
nine months this year compared
with a similar period in 1986.

Towables, travel trailers, fifth
wheels, park models and truck
campers, are up 15 per cent, while
driveables, motor homes and van
conversions are up 30.7 per cent.

All companies have added
emp'yees in 1987, replies in-

dicating increases from 10 to 50
new employees. Practically all ex-
pect a further increase in number
of employees in 1988, with some
companies planning plant expan-
sions.

Business forecasts generally in
the RV industry for 1988 are all on
the optimistic side, with Class ‘*C”’
motor homes, fifth wheel trailers
and park models expected to lead
the way. Predictions of increases
range from 10 per cent to 30 per
cent for 1988, with a movement

Current activity reflects a steady
growth since 1984, Present levels

over the 1984 base year.

Much will depend on the level of
disposable income in the coming
months. The downward pressure
on interest rates is a favorable
omen. The RV industry, which
achieved new product retail sales
of approximately $400 million (ex-
clusive of imports) in 1986 could
reach the $500 million mark in
1987.
