o matter how good your car’s steering and brake
systems are, there is absolutely no way you can drive
safely on worn or damaged tires. The tires are the link

between your car and the road.

Good driving habits help to main-
tain tires. JSack-rabbit starts,

not good. Monthly — inspec-
tions, on the other hand, are.

All new cars come equipped with
radial ply tires. Unlike the less-
expensive older bias-ply tires, radials
have bulging side-walls, even when
properly inflated. Therefore, a visual
inspection of a radial tire’s inflation

in the sidewall may warract tire
replacement.

Finally, inspect the tre tread for
wear, The wear should be uniform
around the tire, edge to edge. The
tread grooves must be at least one-
sixteenth of an inch deep for the tire
to be serviceable. Wear at both
edges, but net the middle, indicates

underinflation; wear down the mid-
dle but not on the edges indicates
overinflation. Wear in regularly
spaced bands around the cir-
cumference indicates replacement
time. Irregular wear indicates a
mechanical problem with
suspension.

Rotate tires every six months or
6,000 miles. When rotating radials,
rotate tires front to back only; don’t
switch them from one side to the
other.
