JIM SHAW More cable TV variety CANADIANS can look forward to more vareity and choice in their cable television fare, says cable TV magnate Jim Shaw. Shaw, whose company Shaw Cablesystems Lid. serves 10 communities in British Columbtra in- cluding North and West Van- couver made his com- ments recently while in Van- couver on business. “Technology has almost gone beyond regulation,’’ said the 50-year old Edmon- ton resident. ‘‘] think there are going to be more open oyal ‘Trusts “YOUR CHOICE’ By JIM JAMIESON skies. Ill take a while but iS coming.”’ What Shaw means by ‘‘open skies’’ is a free enter- prise system virtually unfet- tered by regulation from the Canadian Radio and Televi- sion Commission ~— similar to the way cable TV is set up in the United States. You're going to see things like a cable news network, arts and entertain- ment channels and distant Canadian stations — like for example, making a Toronto station available in Vancouver.”’ Shaw said that the CRTC is in the process of deciding on the licensing of a religion channel called Inner Faith, and in the near future will be hearing applications for health, youth and _ family viewing channels. JIM SHAW But, if the CRTC does eventually let the floodgates open, does that mean our converters will be clogged with dozens of esoteric channels? Not so, says Shaw “You definitely won't see foo many (channels) Research shows that once you pet up to SO. the customer won't watch any tore 7° Phe okey according bo Shaw Wot how your SUISEOMICT boot Shaw tooled us both bdimonton and Vaan COUNT cKxample, Satdh (oa survey last vous Show a trophy cde thand for cable Butoon the other hand arts and enter Pasnenent North NCES NheOws patcab muah higher in Naanouver Chan an Edmonton where they were much more interested in the country music channel.”’ Under the guidance of Shaw, his cable TV company formerly known as both Cable West TV and Capital Cable TV has been characterized by careful, steady expansion since its in- ception in Edmonton in 1970, The company now owns 13 cable systems across Canada from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland with 305,000 subscribers. That compares very favorably with the multi-national Rogers Cablesystems — the largest cable operator in the world which has 1.5 million subscribers in Canada. The idea of getting into the cable TV business was not new to Shaw, whose father, Francis, started Canada’s first cable company in Lon- don, Ont. in 1954. In 1968, Shaw and his brother, Leshie, got involved in purchasing a cable TV outlet in the Wood- stock/Ingersoll area of Ontario. It wasn’t until Shaw — who along with his brother were executives for Shaw In- dustries, a steel pipe treat- ment concern based in Toronto was transferred to Edmonton in the mid-60s that he saw the potential for cable TV in the West “*L telt people in Edmonton were being deprived,’’ said Shaw, who found the Alberta city oa Stark contrast to Toronto where cable TV was already firmly entrenched “At the time, Edmonton on ly had two channels C BO and C TN and CIN had just Started — Obsiousty many Pdimonto nians apreed with Shaw's ASSESSTTICH The company expanding ante Kelowna and Revelstoke praspercd the abeas a T9738) Sooke am LYos and Redo Deer Nandi Castlegar Lead Nelson, and North and West \Vancouscs ny PYRO Aldoup the way. thre company also took over cable COU Panes Bedford Sa ko vittle and Cocrhes in NB Ddctivet IMAGINATION IN LIGHTING 1 tL oMeE ANIL?
