C10 - Wednesday, June 13, 1984 - North Shore News NORTH TO ALASKA No longer a wilderness road IN THESE DAYS of fast travel by interstate high- way — when it is possible to climb into your car and drive from one end of the U.S. to the other without referring to a map — there remains one fabled highway intrepid travelers still dream about with a thousand and one questions about road conditions, places to stay and how to see the many natural wonders this road opens up to them. ' The road is the Alaska Highway, often called simply The Highway by residents of the vast Alaskan and Cana- dian landscape it serves. But luckily for both resident and nonresident travelers, an an- nually updated tome called The MILEPOST All-the- North Travel Guide sees to it that the particulars of driving the Alaska Highway and all other highways of Alaska and western Canada are bet- ter documented than almost any other stretch of open road. The MILEPOST has, in fact, existed as long as the Alaska Highway itself. The 1984 book, just released to bookstores and other outlets by Alaska Northwest Publishing Company, 1s the 36th edition, but earher ver- sions were maps that led motorists from watering hole to watering hole along a rough and sparsely settled route. Today, the Alaska High- way is ‘‘no longer a wilder- ness road but rather a road through the wilderness,’ says The MILEPOST, and the volume describing it has Nary of Alaska changed similarly. Its pages include muile-by-mile logs of all northern high- ways, dozens of route maps and city maps, information about ferries and cruise ships, including Alaska State Ferry schedules, and about 500 travel by plane, bus and train. Other indispensable features answer questions about food, yas lodging, what to see and do, on every road, in every town. Also described are the access routes from bordering Mon- tana, [Idaho and Washington. Hundreds of color photos and a 21]-by-3l-inch fold-out map of the entire area help tnp plans come into focus. ¢ The 1984 edition also com- memorates the 25th anniver- statehood with special features and his- toncal photos” A dozen of the important names, ptaces and events of Alaska’s past are highhghted. Turkish sites to see OF ALL the museums in Turkey, don’t miss. the Topkapi palace. There 1s housed a collection of jewels so impossible to describe that the closest thing that comes to mind 1s a glass factory. After a while, you become so overwhelmed with the sights — emeralds as big as soft- balls, diamonds hike bilhard balls — that you don’t even glance at cases holding tons of solid goid. You'll! also see the famous dagger from the movie, ‘‘Topkapt’’. From the magnificent to SASKATOON the ridiculous: Did you know that the natronal sport of Turkey ts Grease Wrestling?
