day morning and found so-
meone had heaved a garbage
can through the window of
the liquor store there.

Not long after, three men
in the early 20s were arrested
on Mount Seymour
Parkway. All are facing
charges of break and enter
and possession of stolen
goods while the driver aiso
faces a charge of impaired
driving. A small quantity of
liquor stolen from the store
was recovered.

North Shore comes out
against a general strike

FOUR OUT OF FIVE North Shore residents will-
ing to express an opinion on the fight over the
government’s restraint program would not support
strike action by the unions and Solidarity in an ef-
fort to enforce their demands.

However, one in four of

those polled in a North Shore -

News telephone survey last
week either didn’t know or
refused to answer.

A geographically balanced
sample of 398 households
from Deep Cove to
Horseshoe Bay was asked:
“‘Do you support the anions
and Solidarity on (1) the pro-
posed B.C. Government
Employee Union’s strike; (2)
the proposed strike?’’

Overall on the North Shore

for the BCGEU strike ques-
tion and 288 for the general
strike question, with the
following results:

respondents there was a
marked difference between

North Vancouver and West
Vancouver.

In North Van 26 per cent
supported a BCGEU stnke
(74% against). For a general
strike the ‘‘yes’’ response was
24 per cent (76 per cent
**no’’).

In West Van a BCGEU
strike was backed by 1!1 per
cent (89 per cent against) and
a general strike by 9 per cent
(91 per cent against).

None of the 14 individual
neighborhoods polied show-
ed a majority of decided
respondents backing strike
action. The two most
favorable were Lower Lynn
Valley and Lower Lonsdale
West.

In both, 43 per cent sup
ported a BCGEU Js strike,
while support for a general
strike was 35 per cent and 33
per cent respectively.

The poll was conducted the
day before Premier Bennett’s
October 20 TV address, in
which he indicated govern-
ment readiness to seek a
negotiated solution to the
dispute with the BCGEU.
