Unemployed punished

Dear Editor:

With the rise in unem-
ployment our social system
seems to, be getting in-
creasingly polarized — there
are those with jobs and those
without. People who used to
work side by side now face
very different futures.

It is no longer sufficient
that a person be hard
working, skilled, = or
dedicated to accumulating
cash, if he expects to enjoy a

reasonable standard of
living. The fit don't
necessarily survive, you

have to be lucky also.

We write to express our
concerns regarding your
photograph on the front
page on April 6, 1983 and
captioned “The ones who got
through!”

We feel the situation was
given levity — when our
West Vancouver police.
social workers and parents
are constantly trying to
combat the disregard so
many teens (and adults)
have for the rules and
regulations meant to be
observed by one and all.

Drinking and driving are a

problem and for your
newspaper to give such
attention to four young

people who obviously are
out to “beat the system” is
irresponsible.

As the wealth clots further
up in the economic system,
the unemployed = are
punished with radically
reduced expectations.
Survival, not progress,
becomes the issue. I believe
that the NDP recognizes that
being unemployed is not an
offence against society
where the perpetrator needs
a swift kick in his ego. The
government, on the other
hand, should not use
unemployment as a
punishment for the offence
of being a member of a
mismanaged society.

inappropriate change in
terms of Park user needs. I

“Friends of Ambleside Park”
who so eloquently outlined
in the March 20, 1983 North
Shore News, their objection
to the Park as a_ suitable
fountain site. The present
unobstructed view is ab-
solutely magnificent, and in
my opinion, should not be
tampered with. Please
approach Mr. Faris re an
alternative site, such as the
Recreation Centre grounds,
where his proposed generous
gift would enhance, rather
than compete with, its
surroundings.
