A7 - Wednesday, April 20, 1983 - North Shore News B mailbox >< ° Unemployed punished Dear Editor: With the rise in unem- ployment our social system seems to, be getting in- creasingly polarized — there are those with jobs and those without. People who used to work side by side now face very different futures. It is no longer sufficient that a person be hard working, skilled, = or dedicated to accumulating cash, if he expects to enjoy a reasonable standard of living. The fit don't necessarily survive, you have to be lucky also. Dear Editor: We write to express our concerns regarding your photograph on the front page on April 6, 1983 and captioned “The ones who got through!” We feel the situation was given levity — when our West Vancouver police. social workers and parents are constantly trying to combat the disregard so many teens (and adults) have for the rules and regulations meant to be observed by one and all. Drinking and driving are a problem and for your newspaper to give such attention to four young people who obviously are out to “beat the system” is irresponsible. Mr & Mrs. W.S. Survival, not progress, becomes the issue. I believe that the NDP recognizes that being unemployed is not an offence against society where the perpetrator needs a swift kick in his ego. The government, on the other hand, should not use unemployment as a punishment for the offence of being a member of a mismanaged society. not a Unemployment is Drinking picture was ‘irresponsible’ THE $ $ LENSES OPTICAL DEPT. Rehabilitation of the system, not artificial and temporary make work projects; real jobs and the symptoms will start to disappear. I am confident that the NDP is truly con- cerned about the shattered dreams of a whole stratum of society — the unemployed. This concern wil] manifest itself in an attempt to create new jobs and that will benefit everybody. I am supporting the NDP in North Van-Capilano (Olga Kempo) in the hope that things will get better. Stop changes to Ambleside Park OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR, WESTVANCOUVER Re.: Proposed Changes to Ambleside Park 1 wish to voice my concern for the two proposed changes to Ambleside Park. 1)The planned $240,000 reorganization is both an unnecessary expense and an inappropriate change in terms of Park user needs. I urge you to vote “no” to the proposal during your budget discussions and demonstrate both an intent of fiscal restraint and a sensitivity to the wishes of your elec- torate. a = Soxntans SSRIS Sehenee ea Join our birthday celebrations as we | offer 19th Anniversary savings and everyday low prices on a full selection of quality glasses, fashion frames, soft contact lenses and much more. The present unobstructed view is ab- solutely magnificent, and in my opinion, should not be tampered with. Please approach Mr. Faris re an alternative site, such as the Recreation Centre grounds, where his proposed generous gift would enhance, rather than compete with, its surroundings.
