mailbox v b . a Dear Editor: Regarding your issue of February 3, 1980, wherein you reported on an interview with Honorable’ Ron Huntingdon (P.C. Capilano). The tenor of Mr. Hun- tingdon’s remarks were a criticism of the competence and work ethic of the Canadian working force, and most specifically the British Columbia work force. As to the validity of his information, he states “$4.00 per hour difference between the West Coast Steel Trades and the East Coast Steel Trades.” If he is referring to base wage rates, the com- parison is:- Welder, St. John Shipbuilding $9.16 per hour, Welder, Burrard Yarrows Corporation $11.49 per hour, or a_ difference of Okay to give union fun Dear Editor: In reply to Mr. Hassell of Vernon, I'm a longtime NDP member and approved of the decision to place NDP ads appealing for funds and memberships throughout B.C. I am surprised we should be caught “lecturing” other Parties on how to organize their finances. The bulk of NDP money comes from our membership. We have no $2.33 per hour. However, if he is using the normal comparison i.e. total package, the difference shrinks to $1.37 per hour in favour of the West Coast. He goes on to lay the excesses of sucessive Canadian Governments at the feet of the over burdened Canadian taxpayer. The reasoning behind this statement leaves one rather confused when one con- siders that it was the Canadian taxpayer who threw the Liberal Govern- ment out of office for over spending, and his own moment of glory was cut short when his government tried to introduce a budget designed to sink us deéper in the quagmire. Mr. Huntingdon insults every working person im hidden “slush funds” and a visit to the Provincial Secretary will confirm this. Whilst appreciating the principled stand your correspondent from Vernon took 23 years ago, I do not agree with his reasoning or his inference that members of unions have to give money to the NDP. The business of the union is conducted within the union and not by the NDP, and if a majonty decides to Garbage brings double taxation Dear Editor: A recent North Van- couver City Council decision continues the garbage collection inequities for Strata Corporations. Under the present system, Strata Corporations in the City of North Vancouver have to provide their own garbage container service as the Ciy does not offer container pickup. However. the tax structure in the City of North Vancouver includes garbage pickup. this would appear to be a form of double taxation. The Owners. Strata Plan VR-254 call upon all Strata Councils within the City of North Vancouver to fight this inequity. Geraldine M. I was not aware that Mr. Hun- tingdon was a trained Naval Architect or Marine Engineer. I was of the opinion we got rid of arrogance in power when we dumped “fuddle duddle.” The last quote by your reporter, “There are some rather delicate mitigating circumstances behind these deals I am not at liberty to discuss yet”, strikes a very alarming note. Are we to look forward to another “Watergate” or “Sky Shops” situation. Unions find their aims and objectives similar to that of the NDP and some join by affiliating, allowing a few cents per member as the fee for affihation. The formula also covers those who disagree by withholding the percentage in disagreement. The NDP encourages union members to join the party as members. Each union has its “to workers Secrets Act. In conclusion, having perused the interview very carefully. and having discussed it thoroughly with the delegates of The Van- couver & District Metal Trades Council, representing all In- ternational Trade Union in the shipyards in the lower mainiand, 1 feel that any working person in the Capilano riding who exercises their franchise in favour of any person, who publicly insults and maligns them, should make an immediate appointment with a psychiatrist. I have lived in West Vancouver for six years and am still amazed when I see my neighbours burning their trash, etc., in back yards and on front streets Are these people too lazy to bundle up their garbage for pick-up by the City or to take it themselves to a disposal site, or do they just not care about polluting the air outside.
