C6-Wednesday, April 23, 1980 - North Shore News Innoculations - the real story , DEAR BARBARA: We are going to Europe this summer and would like to know the real story about in- noculations. The last time we had smallpox vac- cinations was in school — more years ago than we'd care to tell. The local health unit says that we don't need anything. Would you tell us what we should have? ANSWER: Your local‘health unit is falling down on the job unless they tell you that you should have T.A.B.T. (typhoid and tetanus) and an upgrade on your polio vaccine. Everyone, anywhere, needs. these vaccines and many of us never bother. In addition, a diptheria shot wouldn't do you any harm. Most adults let their diptheria im- munization lapse when they left school and this plague is making itself known again. Europe is fairly free of cholera, but an epidemic in Naples a few years ago left a lot of people hollering for vaccine that wasn't available. If you are heading for Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece or Yugoslavia, you may be wise to get cholera shots. At this time all is well, but you never know what can develop in the next few days! Cholera shots will make your arm sore for a few days and may give you a fever- and chill problem. T.A.B.T. will make your arm hurt and swell. Both are worth the trouble, but plan to get a shot a few weeks before you leave. Polio vaccine is “oral” and won't cause you any problems. GO TOIT. As far as I know, smallpox isn't mecessary anywhere. My shots are up-to-date but I can still see that ugly scab on my arm where they did the booster. “Don't get it wet” said my doctor. “If it itches, don't scratch. Anywhere the serum moves, from your fingernails to another open spot, you'll get an eruption and a scar.”. YETCH! This was no time to have an itchy eye. DEAR BARBARA: I need this answer quick because Im in a real spot. I've been living with a man for six months and we'd planned to go to Southern California for a month this summer. We put together a joint bank account to finance the trip and both of us have con- tributed what we could save towards it. We both have ordinary jobs — nothing WAIKIKI *469 @ Days. 7 Nights Aw & Hote! 'm a waitress and he works part-time in a garage and as a night wat- chman three days a week. He's a wonderful person and we're very happy together. The problem is that the $900 we saved is so little. What if our car quits? Are prices very high in the United States? We will lose so much on exchange. What would happen if we ran out of money? We don’t have anyone to depend on for help. How can we save money and still enjoy our vacation? ANSWER: You didn't tell me much about your car. Is it in pretty good shape? Is it a compact or a gas-guzzler? Can your “spouse” do minor repairs himself? Next, you must consider emergencies. Do you have a recognized credit card such as Visa? Do you have a gas credit card? If not, get them. Don't use them except in emergencies but they may save your Sanity. Prices in the USA are lower than in Canada even if you consider the exchange. It isn’t difficult to find a decent 99¢ breakfast, and if need be, eat it three times a day! The Motel-6 chain is cheap and excellent. Some are so busy that you must book and pay in advance. In any, check-in no later than 3 p-m. An alternate is staying in the local hotel or facsimile in small towns. Here again, arrive early. Contact the California Tourist Association for an accommodation guide once you arrive. Book in advance, near the area that you'd want to spend most of your time. When you arrive, consider using buses instead of the car and compare prices. If you can borrow a small Coleman stove and a cooler, you could save a lot of money by preparing many of your own meals. Head for the nearest park with your gear d have suggested camping but the initial expemse can be quite high. You might consider buying a pup-tent and a couple of sleeping bags and camping the odd night on your way down and back. I must warn you about the mosquitoes in the Grant's Pass area — bloodthirsty! Go ahead! Have a won- derful time and if you watch your money carefully, you'll probably have enough left Over to. start your next vacation account. DEAR BARBARA: would you nopecat axa gift to bring an elderly Italian grandmother? [ve got the rest of the problem sorted- out (frozen salmon and prime ribs for my uncles, ‘Canadian T-shirts and games for little cousins, silver charm bracelets for teen-age girls) but my grandmother has me stumped. ANSWER: The last time | was in Italy, I was amazed to find that tea is becoming popular there, especially with elderly people who can no longer bear the corrosive effect of Italian espresso. A pretty teapot and a supply of tea might be an answer. Italian ladies, even though living in a small apartment, go plant-crazy on the balcony. Why not a small rose bush? these come packed and are quite easy to carry. I tried to check at the local consulate on the legalities of bringing one in and have had no luck to date. Since you're in Toronto, you may have better luck with the con- sulate there. An album of pictures of all the Canadian relatives would be popular with everyone, especially if you included candids, school pictures, Studio portraits, snaps of houses and pets and small handwritten notes from each person. It may take a while to collect these but would be fun todo. Passport ph otos hile you wait North Shore Darkroom 1527 Lonsdale 988-9813 din - _Blgrre Car Metzler.
