There are three sources of auto parts and typically a combination of the three are used by mechanics, said Mark Kettlewell, a parts man at Dave Buck Ford. At dealerships like Dave Buck, consumers are most likely to get parts that come from the vehicle manufacturer. But, those parts might be new or rebuilt, depending on the type of part. Carburetors, alternators, Starters, and water pumps are some of the smaller items that can be rebuilt by removing the parts that have worn out. By replacing the worn parts of a carburetor and cleaning it, the carburetor is as good as new, says Kettlewell. The big difference is price — rebuilt parts can be 30 to 40% cheaper than a new part — but both are covered by the same manufacturer’s warranty, he said. Even engines are rebuilt, al- though the process is much more complex, said Kettlewell. The origina! block will be used, but the engine is remanufactured using that base, he said, the quali- ty of the new engine is as good as one that has been made using a new block. It is very rare for dealerships to put a used part into a customer’s vehicle. Kettlewell explained that save money although the part will be less ex- pensive, some of its life will have been used up. “Certain parts can only go for so long.” When your car is not being fix- ed by your dealership, parts will come from an auto wrecking yard or from a parts jobber. Like the dealerships, jobbers tend towards the new or rebuilt parts that are backed by the parts manufacturer, said Jim Yeager, a salesman with North Shore Auto Parts. He says it is a misnomer that the part has to come from the original vehicle manufacturer since all parts manufacturers meet the same standards as those found through the dealership. Auto parts are getting more complex, said Yeager, adding that the electronics and computeriza- tion on newer cars are harder to fix without intense training. “Cars in the ’90s are becoming very technical. ““Back yard mechanics are going to have problems with the car of the future,’’ he said. But if you are a_ do-it- yourselfer, Yeager points out that many jobbers will pay a core price for a used part that you are Teplacing on your auto. This payment compensates the customer for the core part of the item that will be used again in the form of a rebuilt part, he explain- ed. a 7 {aw res, KY, ‘Get ready for Spring & Summer Tune your Mazda!
