Lautens misiea Dear Editor: T hope Mr. Lautens gets down on his knees every day to thank his Maker that he happened to be born male and will never have to suffer the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy. (Say it again: abortion wrong, Sept. 29). While he has stretched to the limit the reaches of emotionalism with his extreme and unrealistic example ofa late trimester “vacuum extraction,” his attempt to reit- erate his position reminds me of Shakespeare’s words “Methinks thou doth protest t00 much.” 1 would like to know where this type of misleading information comes from. The fact that Mr Lautens uses this as an example in his column explains weil the danger of propaganda in the hands of the uninformed, The type of procedure Mr. Lautens refers to does not happen in Canada. During a live birth, a vacuum extractor is sometimes used as an alterna- tive to a high forceps delivery, but it is a very high risk procedure and it is never used as an abortive procedure. Two wrongs don’t: make anything right, but as human beings one may only make the best choice for the situation they are presented with. Personaily, I would very much like to see an end to child abuse and violence everywhere. Sexual assaults are violent. A neglected or starving child is child abuse. The social consequences of child abuse and violence are enormous. I wish that people would put their valuable energy and resources into preventing child abuse and prevent- ing violence that occurs as rape, incest, and forcing one’s will upon another. Will Mr. Lautens ever find himself’ pregnant against his will? No. is on abortion Yesterday a religious group of people chose to protest against abortion by pick- eting and demonstrating on the streets. Did their placards state “stop rape” or “stop incest?” No, once again they choose to demonstrate with slogans that equate to closing the barn door after the horse has run away. Alas once again the campaign supported by these demonstra- tors has litte to do with life and has the most to do with the control of women. In order: for women to have any chance at equality or self determination, they must have reproductive choice. Mr. Lautens’ approach and the approach of those demonstrators yesterday only pro- motes more violence against women. The time has come to rethink that approach.
