Sunday, May 7, 2000 - North Shore News - 15 Late Capilano Fashion . RFC player honoured Flesh-eating disease claimed Kiwi visitor Bob Mackin Sports Reporter bmackin@nsnews.com THE mother and brother of a late Capilano Rugby Football Club player were on the North Shore in Aprii to thank those who helped them through a difficult time. New Zealander John “Stormy” Salkeld was only 30 when he was taken off life support in a Dutch hos; ital Dec. 18, 1999. What began as a tooth infection ended in a losing battle with necrotizing fasciitis, the so-called flesh-eating disease. ; His mother Bonnie Salkeld rushed from New Zealand to the Netherlands just days earlier to find her son neglected, even ridiculed, by hospi- tal staff. Her perseverance got him a transfer to a better hospital and surgery, but it turned out to be too little, too late. john Salkeld was working as a labourer in the Netheriands and was preparing to return home to New Zealand after almost six years of travel- ling to Europe and the North Shore. His death, however, is under investigation by Dutch health authorities. A comprehensive report is imminent, Bonnie Salkeld said. She is pondering legal action but is wary of the exorbi- tant fees European lawyers are seeking. “Ar the end of the day, nothing's going to. bring Johno back, we know that,” she said. “But I honestly believe that through the investigation they will find our what these doc- tors had done, even before this. And maybe that’s why Johnny’s not here because no one stood up to them in the past. . “It can’t happen again, it can’t happen to someone else. He’s not going to die for nothing.” . Ir started, innocently enough, when John Salkeld hid a tooth pulled by a dentist. He returned the next day complaining of swelling, but was given herbal mouthwash instead of antibiotics. Bonnie Salkeld said the dentist gave him nothing more than camomile tea. “Everyone says’ we're very strong,” she said. “Sometimes I don’t feel like it. I can put on a good exterior, but that’s what I’m feeling like underneath, but we'll get there. Johnny’s last words I heard were he was asked if he was afraid. Not for himself, but for his mom.” Both Bonnie and John’s older brother Alan said the support from Capilano RFC has been tremendous. Capilano’s Bob Spray Shield was presented posthumously to “Stormy” at the Night of the Bear Awards Night April 8 and accepted by Bonnie and Alan. Giulio De Cotiis was the first recipient of the John Salkeld Memorial Cup to honour the front row player of the year. . Members of Capilano and “Stormy’s” home club, New Zealand’s East Coast Bays, dedicated the remainder of their seasons to their failen comrade. A maple leaf tree was even planted in his memory at the Bays’ home pitch. photo supplied RUGBY’S John “Stormy” Salikeld (right) with his mother, Bonnie Saikeld. | photo supplied ALAN Salkeld (right) said the support given by Capilano | Rugby Club after John’s death was tremendous. ; We'd love to give you 50% OFF But that would mean that our everyday low prices were overinflated to begin with!!
