Over the past five years in) West Vancouver, there have been at least tour accidents involving trucks losing their brakes on steep residential streets. The most recent accident occurred last December at the inter- section of 21st Street and Inglewood where two van drivers suffered injuries and vehicle damage after being hit by a runaway dump truck. The accident also resulted in exten- sive property damage to a number of area residences. Coan. Allan Wiliams, who pre sented the new truck bylaw amend- ments on Monday night, suggested council quash a previous considera- tion that called for permits to be issued to trucks wishing to travel into or through West Vancouver district. A truck satery report from West Vancouver's assistant: director of operations Gordon MacKay also rec- ommends that brake-check areas not be constructed on 13th, 23st and 22nd Streets, “but that staff explore the possibility of construction at ahernate locations ~— (including Wednesday, February 11, 1998 — North Shore News - 5 bylaw improvements to “Favlor Way)” he elimination of the brake- check areas clears the way for council co proceed with the restrictive down- hill ruck traffic bylaw. When asked why he requested that council dismiss the permit idea, Williams said: “In discussing it with Keith Jackman, former provincial superintendent of motor vehicles, he said you (the municipality) will And it totally impractical. By the time vou stop them here, make them get a permit, it would) be impractical,” Williams said. “So we're going, to do it in a more positive way and stop the trucks on the street and if they don’t Attention EGP OWNERS Complete mechanical ond electrical From pane3 where martial arts such as Karate-Do, Qigong, Wing Chun, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Kendo and Wushu will be taught features a unique floor made of B.C. When asked what he thought about provincial action in the matter, Williams said: “They (the province) aren't accepting their responsibilities. We can’t have trucks running off down our streets and smashing up people and causing them injuries while we wait for the minister (of highways) to do something. So we're going to have our own bylaw which we will enforce.” He predicts that the truck regula- tion bylaw will be ready next week and final truck traffic bylaws could be in place three weeks from now, mn A PRICES _ ANVENTORY | CLEAROUT: SALE ATERSHORRE! nn Valley Centre 904-9755. “(|_Let’s Make a Deal UTON BLOWOUT! 0397 he . leclutes, sald pe Sef bel frame.
