The Federation of Mountain Clubs of B.C, has been awarded an Environment Youth Team (B-Team) work crew to update and refurbish the popular North Shore vertical trail, says Environment, Lands and Parks Minister Paul Ramsey. “The work crew will be upgrading one of the most popular hiking sites in the Lower Mainland, the Grouse Grind Trail on) Grouse Mountain,” said Ramsey. The Environment Youth Team is an $8,5-million province-wide initiative directed at youth aged 16 to 24 who are not attending school, Many have limited employment opportunities and this program allows them to protect and enhance the envi- ronment while gaining valuable work experience and training. The E-Tcam is made up of three components - Interns, Work Crews and Eco-ed. m E-Team | ‘To ensure that the work crew's skills are developed, the E-Team requires that 20% of project time must be dedicated to formal training. “The work crew will be trained in first aid, bear awareness, hand tools and plant and bird identification,” said Ramsey, E-Team work must be focused on outdoor recreation or the environment and last a minimum of 10 weeks, The Environment Youth Team will subsidize wages and benefits, while employers pro- vide support costs such as training, sup- plies and travel. All positions are posted at local Canada Employment Centres, and candi- dates will be drawn from local youth, including traditionally disadvantaged groups.
