I’m not surprised. Anybody who has

spent any amount of time around:

understand why. it’s held together.

Thirty.years ago NSRT founding,

over the world and we could never
function well as a team. On call-outs
there were total screw-ups,” he said.
~ Winter grew up in Bavaria and as

rescue team. He participated in his
first mountain rescue “at the tender
ageof 15 yearsold” - |

sticks with it.

occurred in Austria. He was touring
the Alps with five members of the
team in 1973. Winter and a fellow
team. member were
Dachstein Mecuntain.

A tourist had fallen into a glacier
crevasse. Luckily Winter had a rope

with him. “There: was this guy ina -

crevasse filled with water and he was
drowning. We quickly tied the ice
axe to the rope and Jowered it down.
It happened to be a honeymoon cou-
ple walking across this glacier.
Needless to say if we didn’t have the
rope this man would have drowned
within two to three minutes.”
