On call-outs there were total screw-ups,” he said. ~ Winter grew up in Bavaria and as INFANT W ustria a youth was a member of a mountain rescue team. He participated in his first mountain rescue “at the tender ageof 15 yearsold” - | Forty-five years later he still sticks with it. lronically his most memorable life-saving -incident with North Shore Rescue Team members occurred in Austria. He was touring the Alps with five members of the team in 1973. Winter and a fellow team. member were Dachstein Mecuntain. A tourist had fallen into a glacier crevasse. Luckily Winter had a rope with him. “There: was this guy ina - crevasse filled with water and he was drowning. We quickly tied the ice axe to the rope and Jowered it down. It happened to be a honeymoon cou- ple walking across this glacier.
