ee Se rn rd ve of 30 - Sunday, June 11, 1995 - North Shore News @ PET CLINIC @ WARM WEATHER BRINGS PROBLEMS TO PETS by Dr. Jeff Grognet and Dr. louise Janes While you enjoy the warm summer temperatures, don't for- get that your pet faces hazards from excessive heat. Pets suffer from heatstroke, just like people. Heat stroke is seen when animals are left out on a hot day without adequate shade or water. It also happens when they are confined to enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, such as cars. People shed excess body heat by sweating. Dogs and cats are not that lucky. The only sweat glands they have are on the pads of their feet and on the wet part of their noses. They must rely on other means to jose heat. Dogs depend on panting as their primary means of eliminating excess body heat. Panting is a heat exchange system. The overheated dog has warm blood circulating in the fining of the nose. When a dog inhales cool KEEP YOUR PET air through the nose, the air passes over the nasal lining and picks up the excess heat. The now warm air exits by the mouth. The air used in the panting system never enters the lungs. Cats can pant but they usually rely on another method to eliminate heat - grooming. By licking themselves and wetting their fur, they cool down as the saliva evaporates. Pets suttering from heat stroke initially show signs of increased panting and drooling. Later they will collapse, exhibit convulsions and slip into a coma. If you are concerned about heat-. 3 stroke in your pet, call your veterinarian. You can provide immediate help at home by soaking your pet’s skin with cool (not cold) water. Also, rub the skin to help restore circulation. gh COOL... during these hot summer days. A trip to the groomer or mail should be healthy and enjoyable for your pet. Howe Sound Pet Services Ltd. offers fully air conditioned facilities and cool clean drinking water with all grooming and pet check services. Remember, when your pet gefs too hot, he can't take his coat off.
