IN 1994 the Brackendale region of southwestern British Columbia eclipsed the Chilkat Reserve in southeast Alaska for the world record count for bald eagles. With numbers in excess of 3,700 (3,788 to be exact), Brackendale soared to the number one ranking. This season’s count day. adminis- tered by the Squamish Estuary Conservation Society, the BC Wildlife Service and the Brackendale Art Gallery, will be held on Jan. 15, 1995. Brackendale, which is 45 minutes north of Vancouver and 35 minutes south of Whistler, has traditionally been chosen by the eagles as a win- tering ground to feed on the healthy chum salmon runs of the Squamish and Cheakamus rivers. Surrounded by magnificent 8,000-foot glacier- capped peaks and emerald green forests, visitors can view and photo- graph eagles from a variety of loca- tions.
