Diamonds aren’t forever for North Shore baseball leagues WHILE DIAMONDS may be forever, the North Vancouver Recreation Commission (NVRC) desperately needs to mine some more. : By Kevin Gillies _ Contributing Writer When it comes to accommodat- ing baseball teams this summer, the demand on fields will be extremely tough to meet. . . Especially for hardbatl teams. Ban McLaughlin, a member of the North Vancouver Community Sports and Recreation Council, said older leagues may have to start later this year to allow younger leagues .to finish. 2 This comes at a time when the - largest North Shore-based league for men over 22 is talking of expan- sion. According to Jim Casano of the KI TIPS North Shore Men's Basepatl Association, three new teams may be added to the seven existing ones that fast year played at Inter-River Field, Meanwhile, the Joe Shea League for 13-year-old, has 22 teams play- ing at two parks, and the |4-year- olds have 18 teams playing on four fields. The 15-year-olds add another 19 teams, Mix this with the demand tor parkspace from the ever-growing softball leagues. and the North Shore is becoming a small town io play ball in. “We will never have enough dia- monds,” McLaughlin said. Currently there are two projects on the go which coufd case the pressure but their arrival could be too late. Plans for two 90-foot dia- monds behind Parkgate Mall are being stalled by a study of impacts on fish in the area’s crecks. A school field would be the third fieid in the development, making Parkgate North Vancouver's obvi- ous tournament centre for Lite League Basebail, McLaughlin estimates that it ‘could be as far away as four years. The anticipated expansion of the Inter-River site could also include additional park space but a wide variely of local sports will be vying for more park space, McLaughlin indicated that sonic relic! may come from the private sector. Many leagues are contributing financially to building and mainte- nitnce costs in an effort to secure a field, but it’s possible North Vancouver could run out of fields before new ones are built. Extra Innings... A new tier-1, big league baseball team for 16- to 18-year-old boys is forming on the North Shore. Called the CP Rebels, they are looking for players from the North and West Van. Try-ouls will be held March 5-6 at an unde- termined venue. For more informa- tion, call Mike at 925-7834 or Nancy at 922-8901. ‘ime to find the time to ski “WOW! By Mark Gascoigne Contributing Writer The young man’s excited com- ment was in reference to us, because we live so close to the ‘spectacular white-capped moun- tains that are crowned with the Lions. : Like so many things, we often Need to step back to fuily appreciate what is right in front of our noses. However, to really appreciate what we have in our backyard, we. should not step back but step up and get on top. The best way to do this is to go skiing. _ “But IT can’t find the time to go skiing.” Sound familiar? You do not have to tke a full day to go skiing. One of the great luxuries of liv- , ing on the North Shore is how quickly we can access the moun- tains. bd From Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove, you are never more than 30 minutes from a ski lift to some of the best urban ski areas on the con- tinent.
